Overview
The STS Tax Senior, State and Local Tax role provides tax advisory support to clients, focusing on the implications of business objectives, compliance with tax regulations, and communication of potential risks. The role includes preparing and presenting to clients and potential clients, and acting as a primary client contact as needed. Responsibilities
Research and issue framing: identify when research is needed, frame issues, locate information, analyze facts and authorities, and report findings. Tax compliance and planning: ensure client compliance while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; apply tax compliance knowledge with high accuracy; price services and sell related services; manage tax engagements and ensure engagement letters are adopted prior to starting work. Tax consulting and strategy: develop and implement methods to maximize client benefits by reducing taxes or expenses; apply knowledge of state tax sub-specialties; interpret existing and new laws to maximize benefits; involve other specialists as needed; provide guidance on tax strategies and client advisory services. Tax controversy and software: review assessment notices; handle routine questions from federal or state agencies; utilize GoSystems, tax research databases, and other tools; train staff on software tools. Specialization and education: develop in-depth understanding of tax areas, lead internal training, and organize ongoing education for staff; supervise associates as appropriate. Accounting for income taxes and related standards: apply FAS 109 and FIN 48 guidance; assist others in learning; review tax provisions and coordinate with Assurance counterparts. Strategy development and client service: explore tax strategies, assess implications, and propose client alternative actions; build client relationships and manage expectations; provide leadership on engagements and ensure timely delivery. Leadership and supervision: supervise STS SALT Associates, provide performance feedback, and mentor junior staff; manage project accounting and billing where applicable. Qualifications and Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s in Accounting/Taxation or J.D. preferred. Two or more years of state and local/multi-state tax experience required. CPA certification or other relevant certification preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word) and tax software; strong research skills; ability to use tax applications effectively. Excellent verbal and written communication, strong analytical and research skills, and solid organizational skills; ability to meet deadlines and multi-task; ability to work independently or in a team; strong client relationship skills. Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on engagements; knowledge of tax compliance and ability to represent clients with tax authorities when needed. Compensation
National Range: $73,500 - $131,250; Maryland Range: $73,500 - $131,250; NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $73,500 - $131,250; Washington DC Range: $73,500 - $131,250. About Us
