Overview The Director of the Toledo Jazz Youth Orchestra serves as the ensemble's conductor and primary educational liaison. The TJYO Director will report to the Artistic Director of the Toledo Jazz Orchestra and collaborate closely with TAPA’s Education Manager and Community Engagement Manager to support recruitment, enrollment, and outreach efforts.

Position details

Position Status: Part-Time, Seasonal (between November-May)

Compensation: Up to $4,000; commensurate with experience

Schedule: Weekly rehearsals; flexible weekday to be coordinated with the TAPA Education team

Requirements

Accomplished musician and improviser

Proven leadership experience with a jazz orchestra

Strong pedagogical background in working with young musicians

Demonstrated commitment to music education and youth engagement

Responsibilities and duties

Plan appropriate repertoire for the Toledo Jazz Youth Orchestra rehearsals and performances.

Prepare students to the best of your ability for a positive, musical experience in concerts and rehearsals.

Serve as a public advocate for TJYO and music education; provide leadership in the arts community as it relates to music education for youth.

Assist in recruitment efforts as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Expectations

Communicate in a timely manner with members of the TAPA administration.

Maintain current knowledge of regional schools and community music schools with band and orchestra programs and maintain collegial relationships with directors of these programs.

Present the Toledo Jazz Orchestra and its affiliated programs in a professional manner.

Attend all TJYO events as you are able (please give notice if you are unable to attend).

About TAPA The Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) is a collective consisting of the Toledo Symphony, Toledo Ballet, Toledo Symphony School of Music, Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras, and most recently, The Toledo Jazz Orchestra. TAPA strives to establish meaningful partnerships with individuals and organizations that fundamentally impact the cultural life of our region. As a vibrant and growing arts organization, TAPA empowers all in our region to experience the performing arts through concerts, recitals, education programs, community engagement and activation, private lessons, fully staged productions, and more.

In the fall of 2024, TAPA will move its headquarters to the former Masonic Temple adjacent to the Stranahan Theater on Heatherdowns Blvd. This new facility will serve as the artistic hub for all of TAPA's administrative offices, education programs, private lessons and group classes, some performances, and community programming.
