Purpose Contributes to the overall success of GBM US Finance ensuring specific individual goals, plans, and initiatives are executed/delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures.

Role Responsibilities

Assist in setting U.S. GAAP policy and delivering reliable guidance on U.S. GAAP and IFRS accounting standards, including impacts on regulatory reporting.

Develop, maintain and implement policies, procedures and methodologies in coordination with head office IFRS accounting policies and procedures professionals.

Support the development and maintenance of methodologies to ensure reporting aligns with U.S. regulators’ guidelines, quality standards and timelines.

Assist in improving the quality, integrity, relevance, security and ownership of Scotiabank’s financial and regulatory information.

Establish credible relationships with business partners and provide perspective on finance and accounting matters pertaining to business activities.

Assist in input to new product development and implementation; perform initial reviews of accounting for existing financial reporting.

What You’ll Do

Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

Support the implementation of accounting policy matters for the combined U.S. operations of the bank.

Assist in the implementation of accounting policies, procedures and support process implementation

Document and update U.S. GAAP accounting policies and procedures

Develop and administer training on U.S. GAAP accounting standards, IFRS/U.S. GAAP differences, and changes or developments in accounting standards

Conduct research on U.S. GAAP technical accounting issues including support for IFRS interpretations

Identify and facilitate the involvement of key stakeholders

Provide support to stakeholders on financial and regulatory reporting issues and/or changes.

Maintain an expert knowledge of U.S. GAAP and ensure alignment with regulatory reporting policies and procedures

Review financial statements and related footnote disclosures to ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP

Initiate problem resolution for discrepancies and contribute to quality control and process improvements

Serve as a point of contact for inquiries and problem resolution with business partners

Participate in periodic meetings/change management for finance and regulatory reporting matters at the Bank

Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

Ensure effective and efficient operations within the area, maintaining strong day-to-day business controls to meet obligations related to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk as described in the applicable frameworks.

What You’ll Bring

CPA, CA, MBA or MS in accounting preferred.

Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP

7+ years of financial reporting experience, accounting policy or technical accounting advisory services in Banking or Financial Services.

Strategic and complex role requiring a results-oriented individual with knowledge of banking business and U.S. GAAP/IFRS; able to engender trust and deliver services on target and on time.

Excellent people skills and ability to influence teamwork and deliver results under tight deadlines.

Strong written and verbal communication skills to drive change management across a culturally diverse workforce.

Ability to research technical accounting standards and monitor new developments; capable of presenting training on changes to accounting standards.

Support the implementation of new U.S. GAAP standards; baseline understanding of U.S. GAAP and IFRS differences.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish credibility with business partners.

Effective listener and communicator; strong organizational and analytical capabilities.
