Undergraduate Academic Affairs has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Services - Assistant Director to join their team. Within UAA, the Office of Merit Scholarships, Fellowships & Awards (OMSFA), housed in the Center for Experiential Learning and Diversity (EXPD), assists University of Washington undergraduates in developing the skills and personal insights necessary to pursue scholarships appropriate to their goals. Our Office provides information and resources to increase student awareness of the scholarship search and application process via workshops, events, online resources and individual advising. We mentor students through an intense process by offering resources, advising and individual feedback which result in competitive applications for local, national and international scholarships. We collaborate with faculty and staff to identify and support potential student scholars. OMSFA also manages UW nomination processes for, and works closely with, national and international scholarship programs including: Astronaut Scholarship Foundation, Fulbright US Student Program, Gilman Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships, Rhodes Scholarships, Truman Scholarships, and many others. OMSFA values an inclusive scholarship community fostered through information sharing, transparent processes and diverse participation. We are committed to providing students, faculty and staff with the tools and resources needed to support individual students in crafting their strongest scholarship applications. The Assistant Director position will lead the Mary Gates Endowment for Students Research Scholarships program, Community Investment Scholarships program, Mary Gates Endowment Partnerships, and manage the UW nomination process for the Astronaut Scholarship, which is a national undergraduate research scholarship. The Assistant Director will also play a vital role in the management of and advising for other national and international scholarships OMSFA supports. About The Mary Gates Endowment For Students The mission of the Mary Gates Endowment for Students is to support University of Washington undergraduates in becoming independent learners and community leaders. The Mary Gates Endowment for Students programs value exploration, community investment, opportunity, and impact. Our vision is to create a community of Mary Gates Scholars, students, and alumni who are engaged citizens and leaders. Responsibilities The Assistant Director will counsel and advise scholarship applicants and recipients, plan, coordinate and manage the Mary Gates Research Scholarships and Community Investment Scholarships programs and application processes, manage the endowment’s partnership programs, and conduct assessment and advancement activities related to the Endowment. This position will develop programs and opportunities that enhance the value of being named a Mary Gates Scholar. Independently advise applicants on eligibility requirements, policies and application procedures for Mary Gates Research and Community Investment Scholarships, Astronaut Scholarships, and other scholarships through workshops and information sessions. Advise students on getting involved in undergraduate research. Coach students to develop and articulate their ideas to improve their chances for success in scholarship application processes. Design and lead workshops and information sessions to educate students, faculty, staff and community members about the purpose, eligibility requirements and application process for Mary Gates Endowment, Astronaut, and other scholarships. Write and disseminate communications materials and online information to publicize and market the Mary Gates Endowment, Astronaut, and other scholarships. Refer students to other programs and offices which may be of interest to them in planning and fulfilling their academic and personal goals. Requirements Bachelor’s Degree 5+ years of experience in program development, student counseling/development, teaching, student services or related student-facing experience in a higher education environment Enjoy working with students and possess strong interpersonal skills, including an ability to communicate effectively across diverse cultural backgrounds and life experiences Team-oriented, collaborative approach and a desire to interact with colleagues across departmental units Strong problem solving, project management, and organizational skills Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in student programming Excellent written and verbal communication skills Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and database systems Preferred Qualifications Experience managing scholarship processes Direct professional experience with undergraduate research programs Demonstrated understanding and experience with website maintenance Extensive experience managing a relational database The University of Washington is proud to be an affirmative action and equal opportunity employer.
