Base pay range $124,051.00/yr - $157,327.00/yr

About The Role We are seeking a Director, Media Relations & Editorial, to join our Communications department. The ideal candidate is passionate about civil and human rights and will have extensive experience writing and editing print and digital media content, as well as media relations and message building for advocacy campaigns. Working with senior managers, this position will provide guidance on strategic media planning and, in collaboration with the VP, Communications, will be responsible for directing and implementing the organization’s media strategy. This position reports to the VP, Communications and is not part of the collective bargaining unit.

What You Will Do

Manage high-priority communication initiatives, ensuring products or services are delivered on time, within scope, and aligned with narrative goals and campaign strategy

Provide strategic counsel to leadership on editorial matters, shaping thought leadership content and high-profile written materials

Lead media relations program by building rapport with leading organizations

Help build brand strategy as it relates to media inquiries and securing select media coverage

Ensure Editorial grows from a service function into a core driver of the organization’s storytelling across platforms

Oversee daily press outreach, editing press releases, statements, talking points, and op-eds for clarity and tone

Support crisis communications and rapid response efforts to national developments and disinformation trends

Lead editorial strategy and oversee the division responsible for written materials

Develop and update editorial guidelines and best practices; explore new formats and AI-assisted editing tools

Partner with the digital strategy team to optimize content for online engagement

Collaborate with other organizations’ communications staff to align partner visibility opportunities

Perform other duties as assigned

What You Will Bring

Proven commitment to civil and human rights with a passion for the issues represented by The Leadership Conference

Minimum of 4 years policy advocacy and political communications experience

Minimum of 4 years cross-functional senior management experience in a communications department

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with attention to detail and the ability to bring one voice to The Leadership Conference

Proven track record of modernizing communications for organizations both internally and externally

Experience in fast-paced environments, including crisis communications and rapid response

Thoughtful listener with a keen ability for discernment

Experience in government relations/government affairs is a plus

Strong interpersonal skills and a collegial working style

Salary Range

– $124,051-$157,327

Telework Policy The Telework Policy is implemented in three phases. First phase (as of September 1, 2025) requires in-person work at least two days per month; second phase (January 1, 2026) at least one day per week; final phase (April 1, 2026) at least two days per week.
