The Division of Correctional Health Services (CHS)
of New York City Health + Hospitals (H+H) is responsible for the delivery of medical care, mental health care, and discharge planning in the jail system. This service provides care to a diverse population with a wide range of mental health needs, including serious mental illness, within specialty housing units, a 24-hour on-call psychiatric service, and integrated treatment modalities across facilities. The system emphasizes safe, holistic, and evidence-based interventions, including substance use treatment, re-entry services, and collaborations with training institutions. The position involves providing primary care to patients in jail-based clinics, performing intake evaluations and treatment, and delivering emergency care with support from Emergency Medicine physicians. The healthcare system is a single-payer model with no physician time dedicated to billing, and no administrative work expected outside of work hours to promote career/life balance. Physicians work as part of a care delivery team with strong administrative support, integrated nursing and mental health staff. Responsibilities
Completes comprehensive histories and physicals on all new admissions. Diagnose and treat acute and chronic illness. Evaluate the need for consult services and submit the prioritized consult when indicated. Review all on-island/off-island specialty consults and hospital returns. Evaluate recommendations to ensure standard of care is met and implement consultant recommendations. Respond to emergencies and fire drills on a priority basis and in a timely and professional manner. Be familiar with performance indicators (P.I.) and take appropriate measures to comply with these standards. Order radiology exams, lab tests, and EKGs when indicated and interpret results with the patient’s clinical status. Notify Urgicare for 3-hour/EMS runs. Generate medical modifications as needed. Maintain clinical competency by reviewing CHS protocols, current medical literature, and CME credits. Provide clinical supervision for P.A.s/N.P.s, including co-signing notes and medication orders. Adhere to CHS policies and procedures; review them as needed. Attend all mandatory in-services. Comply with and maintain Employee Health requirements. This position is located on Rikers Island Schedule: Full-Time, Float Seniority level
