Overview
Scion Executive Search has been exclusively retained by Temple De Hirsch Sinai (TDHS) to conduct an immediate search for a strategic and highly relational Executive Director (ED) with a deep understanding of Reform Judaism. This is a full-time, on-site leadership opportunity in Seattle, WA. Salary range: $165,000-$225,000 DOE annually. Benefits include 100% employer-paid health, vision, and dental for the employee, secular holidays off, Nata Membership, allowance for professional development, 401k with 5% match after 1 year, and a relocation package. Position Overview
The Executive Director serves as the administrative leader for the congregation, reporting to the Board of Trustees and working closely with the Senior Rabbi. The ED will lead TDHS through a development phase, guiding operations across the Seattle and Bellevue campuses and partnering with clergy to advance the TDHS mission as a cornerstone of civic life in the Pacific Northwest. The ED is responsible for all operational facets and will lead the administrative team in collaboration with clergy to uphold pioneering Reform Judaism practices. Responsibilities
Strategic Planning:
Collaborate with clergy, the Preschool Director, the Education Director, and the Board to operationalize TDHS’s mission and strategic plan, translating it into operating plans for administrative departments. Facilities & Technology Management:
Ensure the operations, maintenance, and security of TDHS’s two campuses, cemetery, and mausoleum; oversee real estate with income potential; manage system health of operational software including ShulCloud, Paylocity, and future accounting software modernization. Board Engagement:
Serve as liaison between the Board and TDHS operations; maintain a highly relational and communicative leadership style with inclusive decision-making in partnership with a hands-on, engaged board and volunteers. Education Support:
Collaborate with the Senior Rabbi, Preschool Director, and Director of Education to support supplementary religion schools, preschool, and adult education programs (marketing, enrollment, family relations, facilities, operations, payroll, HR). Community Outreach & Awareness:
Engage members across generations; cultivate relationships with community organizations; build trust-based relationships with members, prospective members, volunteers, and donors; serve as an ambassador for TDHS and keep the community informed of relevant events and developments; leverage technology to boost organizational efficiency and unity. Leadership:
Oversee 30+ employees across departments; model the synagogue’s values, foster a mission-driven culture, manage multiple tasks, and lead with compassion and presence in collaboration with clergy. Budgeting & Financial Management:
Complete annual budgeting in alignment with TDHS’s fiscal calendar; oversee operations within budget; supervise annual audits; pursue grant opportunities with volunteers. Security Oversight:
Maintain security for physical locations and online platforms; coordinate with law enforcement and security consultants and communicate security provisions and risks to the Board and membership. Requirements
Deep commitment to prioritizing strong relationships with the Board, clergy, lay leaders, congregants, staff, and volunteers. Excellent financial acumen with experience managing $5M+ budgets for comparable organizations. Strategic planning experience; experience managing leaders of leaders in a hybrid work environment. Proficiency in Microsoft 365, Teams, and Zoom; HR experience including salary and benefit administration and regulatory compliance. Strong fundraising knowledge, including capital campaigns; experience partnering with a Board of Trustees. Exceptional verbal and written communication; highly strategic and well-organized. Availability to attend events seven days a week, most evenings, and respond to member needs after hours. Ability to analyze information, provide clarity amid ambiguity, and maintain ethical, inclusive leadership. Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in professional conduct.
