Am Yisrael Congregation is a liberal and unique congregation of 365 member households in the near northern suburbs of Chicago. Founded in 1968 and affiliated with United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, Am Yisrael is multi-generational, egalitarian, participatory and socially conscious. Am Yisrael is seeking an Executive Director who will serve as the chief administrative officer of the synagogue, responsible for managing its day‑to‑day operations, finances, facilities, support staff, and member services. The Executive Director works closely with clergy, staff, and lay leadership to ensure the synagogue achieves its mission, fostering a warm and inclusive environment, and ensuring the synagogue continues to serve as a spiritual, educational, and cultural hub for its members. Successful candidates will be outgoing and personable professionals with a proven record of success in community engagement and collaboration, administration, and volunteer management. Also essential are a passion for and knowledge of Jewish culture and history, effective written and verbal communication skills, financial literacy, and the ability to lead both board and staff with tact and diplomacy. Compensation Range
$100,000 – $125,000

Key Responsibilities
Establish and maintain operational policies, systems, and procedures to ensure efficiency and accountability
Hire and supervise all administrative and support staff, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence
Partner with the Board, clergy, education staff, and committees to provide insights and recommendations for effective decision‑making
Work with the Finance Committee, develop and oversee the synagogue’s annual budget
Manage membership outreach and onboarding, creating strategies to attract, engage and retain members
Develop marketing strategies to increase visibility, attract new members, and highlight the synagogue’s unique offerings
Oversee and maintain all communications, including newsletters, social media, website content, and promotional materials
Collaborate with clergy, staff, and the Board to design and execute fundraising plans, including major donor cultivation, capital campaigns, grants, and planned giving
Ensure the synagogue’s facilities are safe, welcoming, and well‑maintained
Qualifications & Skills
Bachelor's degree with 5+ years experience in nonprofit management, synagogue administration, or a related field
Demonstrated success in financial management, staff supervision, operations, fundraising, and marketing/communications
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders
Ability to foster a warm and caring environment
Excellent organizational and problem‑solving abilities, with attention to detail
Demonstrated ability to lead diverse teams and foster an inclusive, collaborative culture across all parts of an organization
Understanding of Jewish rituals, traditions, religious observance, and holidays
Ability to manage in‑person, remote, virtual, and hybrid services and events
Proficiency in social media and technology systems, including databases and office software
Willingness and ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed for programs, events, and emergencies
