Description: As an integral part of the clinical care team, the Patient Care Associate is responsible for patient care and support activities promoting patient-focused care within the Specialty Service. The Patient Care Associate supports the registered nurse in patient care activities, such as assisting patients with activities of daily living, collecting specimens, and performing procedures. Maintaining a safe and clean environment is essential, along with performing other duties as needed. Essential duties and responsibilities include performing and recording patient's vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respirations. The associate documents intake and output and other data as assigned. Obtaining patients' ratings on pain scales is required in all areas except Pediatrics. Clinical procedures performed may include specimen collection, venipuncture, EKG, application of compression devices, post-mortem care, and maintenance of skin integrity. Setting up for selected procedures and assisting registered nurses accordingly is expected. Assisting patients with activities of daily living, such as feeding, bathing, and toileting is part of the role. Orients patients to the clinical environment and assists them with ambulation and mobilization. Dietary functions are assisted with, including delivering and collecting patient trays, passing menus, and reporting variations in eating patterns to the registered nurse or dietitian. Maintaining accurate and timely systems for transmission of patient dietary orders and changes is required. A safe, clean, and functional environment is maintained, ensuring comfortable movement for patients. The Patient Care Associate assists with room maintenance, such as bed stripping and trash removal when necessary. Close observation status of patients, including safety, elopement risk, or suicide prevention, is performed as needed. Isolation status for patients is maintained according to set procedures under the direction of a registered nurse. Scheduled purposeful rounding on patients with emphasis on toileting needs, comfort, positioning, and pain awareness is required. Documentation on the rounding log must be completed. The associate notifies the registered nurse if rounding has not been completed as scheduled or if issues are identified. Utilizing the communication system according to sign-in/sign-out protocol where activated is expected. Other duties as assigned include generating reports as needed. The associate is open and responsive to the diverse backgrounds of others and promotes an environment sensitive to cultural diversity. Respect and value for each patient's unique needs, beliefs, and diversity are essential in delivering care. Shared duties across clinical specialties involve greeting visitors and answering telephones promptly and courteously. Escorting visitors to appropriate areas when necessary and providing information are also required. The Patient Care Associate answers the patient call system and refers calls to appropriate staff. Maintaining a safe, clean, and functional environment involves removing trash and addressing physical plant and equipment problems. Transports patients to stretchers or wheelchairs as required and delivers flowers to patients. Operating the pneumatic tube system when required is part of the role. Shared duties across ICU and specialty units include stripping units/cubicles, performing emergency clean-up, and transporting specimens. Updating communication boards and assembling medical records is necessary. Maintaining supplies and care of equipment is also expected.
