Purpose Statement
The job of Health Office Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing first aid and medications in addressing the health needs of students; clerical support and assisting the nurse in providing appropriate care and/or referral for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students.
Essential Functions Administers, under the direction of the school nurse, first aid and medication to students for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs. Assists school nurse, students, and other school personnel for the purpose of providing specialized treatments, monitoring medical treatments and/or testing at school site. Cleans clinic areas (e.g. sinks, counters, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary environment. Maintains inventory of supplies for the purpose of ensuring availability as needed. Notifies nurse and/or principal of activities and/or incidents (e.g. suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining child's personal safety, a positive home environment and adhering to state, district and/or school policies. Participates in meetings, workshops and professional development for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information, developing knowledge required to perform job functions and meet district objectives. Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g. scheduling, copying, faxing, etc.) for the purpose of supporting health services activities. Supervises students for the purpose of monitoring students referred for illness. Other Functions
Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: administering first aid; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; dispensing medication.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: office application software; 1st aid/CPR.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize specific, job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: maintaining confidentiality; establishing relationships with parents and school age children; working with frequent interruptions; adhere to district policies; regular attendance except when allowed leave.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization's services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Experience Job related experience is desired.
Education High school diploma or equivalent.
