Job location and summary: This position is located in the DC Department of Corrections, Central Detention Facility (CDF) and Correctional Treatment Facility (CTF) locations. This position serves as one of several first line supervisors assigned to each of three shifts within the CDF and CTF Facilities. The incumbent works under the general supervision of a Captain, who sets the overall objectives. Duties And Responsibilities

The Lieutenant is responsible for independently planning and carrying out assignments, including resolution of difficult or sensitive situations, utilizing a broad range of correctional leadership practices and techniques, and supervising a force of correctional personnel in performing correctional and counseling duties. Supervises shift operations ensuring assignments are posted and carried out; conducts roll call; inspecting zones and other assignments for safety/health hazards. Counsels non-supervisory staff on security, inmate conduct, safety, cleanliness and maintenance in correctional settings. Ensures and/or assists in maximizing operational efficiency. Deploys personnel to ensure productive supervision of inmates and staff; respond to frequent, critical and/or emergency situations. Participates in rosters and post orders. Provides staff training and development, performance improvement, and annual evaluations of subordinates. Provides staff support for administrative tasks (reports, records, responsibilities). Interfaces with law enforcement agencies as needed for investigations. Qualifications And Education

Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, with leadership and supervisory responsibilities in a team-based environment. Licenses And Certifications

Incumbent must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR). Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license during employment. Must be able to use a firearm and obtain and maintain a license to carry the firearm. Working Conditions / Environment

Work is performed in a Correctional Institution. Responds to calls required and as needed to return to duty. Other Significant Facts

Screening every ten days. Tour of Duty: Must be flexible to various work hours and assignment locations. Shifts: 3 shifts 7am to 4pm, 4pm to 12 am & 12am to 7am. Pay Plan, Series and Grade: MS-0007-11. Promotion Potential: None. Duration of Appointment: Management Supervisory Service (MSS) At-Will: At-will employment applies to the MSS. All positions and appointments in the MSS serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause. Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is not covered under a collective bargaining agreement. Position Designation: Safety Sensitive; subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks. This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana. TB Test is required prior to entry on duty. Essential Position Designation: The incumbent of this position is designated as “Essential” to the Agency. Residency Requirement: Applicants claiming “Residency Preference” will be required to maintain residency in the District of Columbia for a minimum of seven (7) years.
