Job Summary This position is located in the Department of Health (DOH). DOH promotes health, wellness, and equity, and protects the safety of residents, visitors, and businesses in the nation’s capital. Major Duties and Responsibilities
Incumbent serves as a senior level manager with primary responsibility for Department-wide strategic planning, policy development, programming, and evaluation activities. Provides medical knowledge and medical leadership services to contribute to and advance the vision, mission, and objectives of School Health. Provides medical consultation in the development and implementation of health promotion, quality of care, preventive services, and health activities and initiatives; ensures the integration of efforts to reduce and eliminate health disparities through evidence-based policy and practice.
Establishes and determines program goals and objectives and develops operating plans for assigned projects. Analyzes operational problems and develops solutions; evaluates operational and service effectiveness within units; collaborates with other administrations, agencies, and service providers to promote continuity and efficiency in service delivery.
Leads, directs, mentors and manages a diverse multidisciplinary staff. Makes assignments to key managerial and subordinate staff. Keeps abreast of public health trends and issues nationwide to address problems proactively.
Advises executives on medical issues, represents the administration with community groups and committees, and participates in regional emergency preparedness activities.
Plans, initiates, directs, coordinates, and evaluates professional and administrative management activities to ensure efficient operation of clinical services. Provides guidance to minimize impact of major problems on programs and populations served.
Represents the SDD or other Executive at conferences, meetings, hearings, and legislative forums; participates in vaccine-preventable disease outbreak investigations and emergency response activities as needed.
Assists in developing annual and long-range plans and program priorities, considering laws, priorities, and resource constraints. Keeps abreast of public health developments and advances in the field, and participates in relevant professional activities.
Confer with the SDD or other Executives on personnel, budgetary matters, administration policies, and medical and quality assurance aspects of the programs. Makes programmatic recommendations to ensure effective use of funds.
Qualifications and Education Required Qualifications:
Individuals must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (14) in the normal line of progression for the occupation. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typical of the work of the position and provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties successfully.
Preferred skill, experience & education:
American Board of Medical Specialties or comparable board. Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) or equivalent from an appropriately accredited institution. Master’s degree in Public Health is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications The incumbent must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or registration as a Physician in the District of Columbia.
Working Conditions / Environment The incumbent must be able to carry out official duties in a variety of settings and conditions. Routine work will occur primarily in an office setting.

Position Designation: This position has been designated as
Security Sensitive . Checks may include: criminal background, traffic record, consumer credit (as applicable), reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing, and post-accident or incident drug and alcohol testing.
This position is designated as Essential/Emergency under DC personnel regulations, with related hours and leave considerations.
Residency Requirement If applicable to the appointment type, residency in the District of Columbia may be required within 180 days of the effective date and maintained for the duration of the appointment.
