About 1X
We’re an AI and robotics company based in Palo Alto, California, on a mission to build a truly abundant society through general-purpose robots capable of performing any kind of work autonomously.
We believe that to truly understand the world and grow in intelligence, humanoid robots must live and learn alongside us. That’s why we’re focused on developing friendly home robots designed to integrate seamlessly into everyday life.
We’re looking for curious, driven, and passionate people who want to help shape the future of robotics and AI. If this mission excites you, we’d be thrilled to hear from you and explore how you might contribute to our journey.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, development, and scaling of critical hardware systems for our humanoid robot, NEO. In this role, you will own mechanical components and assemblies throughout their lifecycle—from concept and prototyping to validation and mass production. You will apply advanced engineering analysis, collaborate across disciplines, and ensure our designs are manufacturable at scale. Your work will directly influence the reliability, safety, and scalability of humanoid robots deployed worldwide.
Responsibilities Lead the design and development of structural components, mechanisms, and assemblies that meet performance and reliability requirements
Own the mechanical product lifecycle from concept through validation and production ramp-up
Partner with manufacturing and supply chain teams to apply DFM/DFA principles for scalable, cost-effective designs
Conduct and oversee mechanical analyses including FEA, thermal, and kinematic studies
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical systems into the full robot architecture
Create and maintain design documentation including 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and specifications
Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues during prototyping, testing, and production
Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of innovation and technical rigor
Act as a technical authority influencing design decisions and long-term engineering strategy
Requirements 7+ years of mechanical engineering experience with a track record of bringing complex hardware into high-volume production
Expertise in CAD modeling and analysis tools (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, ANSYS)
Strong knowledge of DFM/DFA principles and manufacturing methods including molding, casting, machining, and forging
Proven ability to design tight-tolerance, high-reliability mechanical systems
Experience conducting advanced mechanical analysis, particularly FEA
Hands-on experience with global suppliers, tooling development, and production scaling
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to navigate complex design challenges
Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate across disciplines
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (PhD a plus)
Bonus: Experience in robotics, automotive, consumer electronics, or other complex hardware systems
Benefits & Compensation Health, dental, and vision insurance
401(k) with company match
Paid time off and holidays
