Early Career Fire and Life Safety Engineer in Training (Active-Duty Military Only) DOD Skillbridge Program – Unpaid internship as part of SkillBridge partnership. Service members will continue to receive military pay and benefits. WSP is seeking to grow teams with people who are ready to collaborate in building communities and expanding skylines. Locations include Arlington – VA, Boston – MA, Columbia – MD, Dallas – TX, Houston – TX, and New York – NY. Your Impact

Contribute to design, development, site survey, testing, and inspection of fire and life safety systems on public and private sector building projects. Assist with research, design, concept development, planning, and integration of automatic sprinkler, fire alarm, mass notification, and smoke control systems. Support egress analysis, smoke control and egress modeling, and building and fire code analysis reviews and compliance. Collaborate to ensure tasks meet or exceed industry standards for safety, functionality, and design quality. Under general supervision, assist with reviewing architectural drawings for code compliance and with producing fire safety strategy documents. Complete training on assigned tasks and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies. Key Responsibilities

Research building code, life safety code, and fire code requirements, including ICC and NFPA standards (e.g., International Building Code and NFPA 101). Assist in designing fire protection and life safety systems: automatic fire sprinkler, fire detection and alarm, smoke management, and egress systems. Assist in preparing fire engineering calculations, including smoke modeling and evacuation analysis (from hand calculations to 3D modeling). Assist in commissioning fire alarm, fire suppression, smoke control, and life safety systems. Perform entry-level engineering tasks and provide support on code requirements, calculations, and design strategies. Assist in reviewing drawings for code compliance and producing basis-of-design documents to inform design decisions. Participate in ongoing training and development. Operate with professional integrity regarding company funds and resources. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Qualifications

Minimum Requirements Active-duty military members; authorization from unit commander to participate in SkillBridge. Bachelor or Master of Science in Fire Protection Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (fire protection focus). 0 to 1 year of fire protection and life safety experience. Skillsets Strong research skills and analytical mindset. Effective interpersonal and written communication for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Self-leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Proficiency in technical writing, office software, and basic engineering tools. Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to policies. Ability to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek; occasional travel may be required. Preferred Skillsets/Qualifications

Engineer in Training Certification. Knowledge of REVIT and AutoCAD. Experience in fire protection engineering design applications. Prior internship in fire protection engineering. Active involvement in professional fire protection organizations. About WSP
