VCAS has adopted the Socially Conscious Sheltering (SCS) framework, which aligns with our core values of encouraging cooperation and collaboration with all stakeholders (elected officials, community members, private veterinarians, transfer/rescue partners, law enforcement, non-profit organizations, local businesses, volunteers, and other animal welfare agencies). VCAS offers a wide array of programs and services to the residents and animals of Ventura County, including animal sheltering, pet adoptions, lost & found, field services, cruelty investigations, pet licensing, TNR surgical services, low-cost vaccination clinics, volunteer/foster opportunities, and emergency disaster response. Each year, VCAS cares for more than 10,000 stray and surrendered animals. The two main shelters are the Camarillo shelter (400-animal capacity, expandable during disasters) and the Simi Valley Shelter (smaller facility with similar services). In 2014, VCAS became the largest Open Admission Municipal Animal Shelter in California with a Save Rate of over 90% and has maintained this rate since then. The Position
Under general direction, performs veterinary services including spay/neuter surgeries; examines and determines preventative medical care and treatments for shelter animals and stray animal emergency cases; and provides oversight for the security and dispensing of drugs and ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations. Performs other related duties as requested. Distinguishing Characteristics
The Veterinarian is distinguished from the Managing Veterinarian in that the latter is fully accountable to the Animal Services Director and is solely responsible for the management of the veterinary facilities and personnel. Benefits And Compensation
Annual Leave Redemption: The option to cash out up to 100 hours out of 208 total accrued Annual Leave hours per year. Deferred Compensation: Section 457 Plan and/or 401(k) Shared Savings Plan with up to a 3% match on your 401(k) contributions. Health Plans: Flexible credit allowance up to $19,162 annually for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from authorized plans. Flexible Spending Accounts: Pre-tax benefit towards eligible medical, dental, and vision care expenses. Bilingual Incentive: Proficiency levels by exam are $.65 per hour (Level I), $.80 per hour (Level II), or $1.10 per hour (Level III). Holidays: 12 paid days per year including a floating holiday. Pension Plan: County and employee contribute to the County’s Retirement Plan and to Social Security; reciprocity with other public retirement systems may be available for eligible employees. Accreditation pay: Specialty pay for maintaining accreditation. Student Loan Forgiveness: Public Service Loan Forgiveness program eligibility; consult your loan servicer for details. The eligible list may be used to fill current and future vacancies, including Regular, Temporary, Fixed-Term, Intermittent, and Extra Help. Typical Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience
Graduation from an accredited school of veterinary medicine recognized by the Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine of the State of California, with experience in high-quality spay/neuter and animal medical services. The knowledge, skills, and abilities can also be obtained by a degree in Veterinary Medicine and one year of surgical (spay/neuter emphasis) experience. Note: If accredited, the Veterinarian must have received accreditation from the Federal Deputy Administrator, Veterinary Services, APHIS. Accredited Veterinarians may be eligible for specialty pay. Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of a valid license to practice Veterinary Medicine issued by the California Board of Examiners in Veterinary Medicine by date of hire; Ventura County may reimburse related fees. Valid California driver license (license within 30 days of hire); DEA license within 90 days of hire and ongoing maintenance. Proficient in Microsoft Office and shelter software; ability to work with various databases. Willing to lift up to 30 lbs; work shifts in a mobile spay/neuter trailer and at Camarillo or Simi Valley Shelters; ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and share on-call duties. Desired
National Accreditation Number (NAN) issued by the NVAP within 60 days of hire. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of current veterinary best practices, animal welfare laws, and veterinary medicine principles. Skills include accurate diagnosis, clear reporting, and proficient use of computer systems. Abilities include working with minimal supervision, handling high-volume surgical services, training staff, staying current with industry developments, and effective communication with management, staff, public, and partners.
