Position Description:

Specialist- Johnson Lab , Department of Microbiology & Immunology, University of California, San Francisco.

The broad research interests of the lab are in understanding the molecular mechanisms through which new gene expression patterns evolve in yeasts, including fungal pathogens of humans. The applicant will conduct original research in microbial genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry, involving, but not limited to, primer design, PCR, yeast and bacterial transformations, gene disruption, validation colony PCRs, plasmid construction, sequencing, RNA extraction and sequencing, quantitative real-time qPCR, and functional analysis of microbial deletion mutants; perform general lab maintenance of laboratory stocks of DNA, bacteria, and yeast strains; update relevant databases; send requested strains out, maintain equipment, coordinate regulatory compliance. The applicant is expected to independently design, troubleshoot, and interpret experiments. The applicant will design and perform laboratory experiments as described above; present results to the lab; provide feedback on other lab member’s data. Perform routine lab equipment maintenance, sending out strains and reagents to other investigators; organizing and ordering lab supplies.

Responsibilities

Design, troubleshoot, and interpret experiments in microbial genetics, molecular biology, and biochemistry.

Perform primer design, PCR, yeast and bacterial transformations, gene disruption, validation colony PCRs, plasmid construction, sequencing, RNA extraction and sequencing, and qPCR.

Maintain laboratory stocks of DNA, bacteria, and yeast strains; update databases; coordinate sending strains to other investigators; maintain equipment; ensure regulatory compliance.

Present results to the lab and provide feedback on other lab members’ data.

Perform routine lab equipment maintenance and manage lab supplies and ordering.

Qualifications

Junior Specialist — A baccalaureate degree (or equivalent degree) or at least four years of research experience.

Assistant — Master’s degree or a baccalaureate degree with three or more years of research experience.

Associate Specialist — Master’s degree (or equivalent) or five to ten years of relevant experience.

Full Specialist — Terminal degree (or equivalent) or ten or more years of relevant experience.
