You will work at the Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI), a partnership between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, which advances genome‑engineering innovations for human health and sustainable agriculture.

Position Summary The Lab Manager (SRA2) is an integral member of a dynamic research team focused on microbiome editing and phage engineering. The role supports and advances projects that address critical challenges in human health and environmental sustainability. Responsibilities include performing supervised lab procedures, developing new methods, and maintaining day‑to‑day laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

Design and conduct laboratory experiments, including cloning and propagating bacteria, to support the editing and isolation of bacterial strains within microbial communities, in collaboration with senior researchers.

Troubleshoot and resolve experimental or sample‑related issues as needed.

Perform molecular biology tasks: DNA/RNA extraction from microbial samples, PCR for identification/quantification, gel electrophoresis and restriction digestion, sequencing techniques (Sanger, next‑gen basics), Golden Gate cloning, and bacterial transformation.

Carry out microbiology work: culture and isolation of model and non‑model species, growth in anaerobic conditions, enrichment of cultures, measurement of growth, and antibiotic susceptibility testing.

Organize and maintain laboratory equipment, chemical inventories, and laboratory data storage systems; order supplies and reagents, manage purchase orders, and negotiate discounts with suppliers.

Oversee compliance with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) regulations.

Train and supervise undergraduates and junior laboratory assistants in standard procedures.

Process data, calculate transformation and targeted DNA editing efficiencies, and generate graphs, figures, and tables.

Generate reagents such as media and antibiotic stock for bacterial and phage editing as needed.

Required Qualifications

Experience in cloning and microbial cultivation.

Proficiency in data analysis.

In-depth knowledge of laboratory safety recommendations and requirements.

Ability to manage time and work on multiple concurrent tasks/projects.

Skill for keeping detailed records of experimental results.

Knowledge of laboratory equipment and troubleshooting skills.

Bachelor’s degree in a related field with 1+ years of experience and/or equivalent training.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience negotiating and communicating with suppliers.

Salary & Benefits Budgeted annual salary range: $63,257.82 – $68,511.85. This is an exempt, monthly‑paid position. For additional information on the comprehensive benefits package, visit the University of California’s Compensation & Benefits website.
