Overview
Director, Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences Grant Programs (UTH/CCTS) at UTHealth Houston. This role provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of all grant-related activities, with a primary focus on the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) and related multidisciplinary programs. The Director advances the Center’s mission to enhance research, education, and training in clinical and translational science across multiple institutions and disciplines.
Position Summary The Director, Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences Grant Programs (CCTS) provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of all grant-related activities, with a primary focus on the CTSA and related multidisciplinary programs. The role leads the full lifecycle of grant management—including development, submission, and renewal of large-scale, multi-institutional proposals—and serves as lead editor and coordinator for complex submissions. In collaboration with Principal Investigators (PIs), Co-PIs, Component Directors, and administrative teams, the Director ensures that all research and training functions align with institutional, sponsor, and regulatory requirements.
Position Key Accountabilities
Directs the development, implementation, and management of the CTSA grant program activities.
Edits, completes, and submits grants and progress reports; oversees grant development, competitive renewals, and related documents for the CCTS and related multidisciplinary, multi-school, and multi-institutional programs.
Works with multiple PIs, Co-PIs, and Component Directors on the overall research, education, and training functions within the CCTS.
Coordinates with the CCTS communications team, including drafting correspondence and grant proposals.
Interacts with the CCTS Administration Finance Office for CCTS finances.
Helps execute training programs, workshops, and seminars for new investigators (basic and clinical) on finding funding and writing grant proposals.
Conducts and supervises training related to research for internal, hospital, and community groups.
Prepares and presents oral presentations at professional meetings.
Works with NCATS on grants and initiatives.
Serves as a liaison to NIH programmatic staff.
Interacts with CTSA and Texas CTSA Consortium (TRCC) networks; serves as a resource for faculty developing research initiatives.
Collaborates with investigators across CTSA participating institutions to identify and apply for grants to fund multi-investigator, multidisciplinary, and multi-institutional programs.
Facilitates collaboration between clinicians and research scientists, internal and external to the university.
Assists in directing and coordinating CCTS network activities with other regional and national CTSA representatives.
Manages Human Resources activities for direct reports (recruiting, hiring/termination, training, development, mentoring, counseling, performance evaluations, and salary planning).
Designs and maintains a system of internal controls to ensure operational effectiveness, asset safeguarding, and reliable, compliant financial information.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills
Advanced-level grant writing skills.
Minimum Education Master's Degree in a related field required; Doctorate Degree in Science or Public Health preferred.
Minimum Experience 7 years of experience in a related research environment including expertise in advanced grant proposal writing and submission is required. 7 years of extensive knowledge in clinical research along with advanced training and experience in program management and strategic management are preferred.
Physical Requirements Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
