The New Mexico History Museum is a statewide educational resource, nationally significant local landmark, and destination for anyone who wants to understand the diverse experiences of the people of New Mexico, the dynamics that have shaped our state, and relationships that connect our region with the rest of the world.

Located on the north side of the Plaza in Santa Fe, the Museum's campus consists of three buildings with a total area of 140,000 square feet. Annual visitation is estimated to be approximately 80,000, including out-of-state tourists, New Mexico residents, and school groups.

Why does the job exist?

As part of the front desk operation, the Cashier is responsible for creating a positive first impression for every visitor to the Museum and for helping get the most out of their time on campus. More specifically, the position is responsible for a smooth admission process, the sale of tickets and passes, and care of the cash drawer, while answering questions, addressing visitor needs, and providing information about exhibitions and programs. The Cashier also assists with special projects and provides administrative support to others within the Visitor Services department and Museum's Administrative Assistant. This customer-facing role requires a professional, flexible and friendly demeanor.

How does it get done?

This position coordinates ticketing and handles financial transactions including cash. Provides orientation for museum visitors - highlighting the museum's many experiences; works with supervisor to resolve issues. This position coordinates the front desk area and assists with keeping the desk and lobby areas tidy and welcoming. Tracks attendance data and prepares attendance reports. Position makes recommendations and prepares desk procedure manuals to improve service, record-keeping, and operations. Answers phone calls & emails, tends to customer inquiries, and directs calls/emails as needed and troubleshoots and identifies areas of improvement. This position assists the museum's administrative staff, and performs other duties as assigned.

Visitors to the New Mexico History Museum, members of the Visitors Services team, and various other museum employees.

Ideal Candidate

1. Understands concepts pf visitor services and marketing. 2. Experience handling money and payments with either cash and/or credits. 3. Ability to analyze data and prepare reports. 4. Knowledge of point of sales systems. 5. Highly collaborative, service-driven, and works well with others, including other staff, and is able to resolve issues.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or equivalent.

Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Working conditions include long periods of sitting, occasional standing, bending, climbing, and lifting. Will be expected to work with the public in a courteous and respectful manner, both in-person an on the phone. Will be expected to use a computer, ticketing system, and printer, as well as fill out hard copies of paperwork. Must work well with other museum staff including other cashiers. Will be required to help with light cleaning and organization of the front desk and entry area. The position will be scheduled to work weekends.
