Natural Resource Management Assistant - AmeriCorps

This Natural Resource Management Assistant is an AmeriCorps position. As a result of a myriad of factors, including heavy visitation, the park being situated next to a major metropolitan area, oceanic currents, and commercial and recreational fishing activity, Biscayne National Park is plagued by marine debris. Left in place, this debris is not only unsightly, it also reduces habitat quality and can injure and/or kill plants and wildlife, including stony corals, sponges, sea turtles, and sea birds. In coastal areas, large accumulations of debris can interfere with successful nesting by threatened and endangered sea turtles. Removal of debris from coastal and marine habitats restores the habitats to healthier conditions, provides for a more pristine environment for wildlife in the park, reduces habitat loss and damage, and offers visitors a more picturesque view of the park. The SIP participant will assist natural resource managers in responding to and removing accumulations of marine debris from marine and coastal habitats throughout the park. The SIP participant will serve as part of a team to remove marine debris from underwater and coastal environments, including coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangrove forests, beaches, and rocky shorelines. During winter months, efforts will focus on coastal cleanup efforts. During summer months, efforts will focus on underwater debris removal. In an effort to better understand the nature and sources of debris, debris items will be tallied and weighed, and debris from particular sources will be separated for individual data collection. In some cases, the SIP participants may collect data on impacts to habitats and organisms. The SIP participant will help develop social media posts related to the marine debris removals for Facebook and Instagram. The SIP participant must be trained in SCUBA, as all underwater projects will require diving. Ideally, the SIP participant will be able to acquire the NPS blue-card certification to provide for full SCUBA authorizations consistent with the rest of the team. The SIP participant will enter data into a park database to help track trends in marine debris. The SIP participant will contribute to entry and maintenance of marine debris databases. The SIP participant will collect key data to better understand the contribution of trap fishery debris to the total debris accumulation, with a better understanding of how the different types of trap debris can harm marine and coastal organisms and habitats. At the end of the position, the SIP participant will present a PowerPoint or similar presentation to the park, summarizing the key findings and main outcomes of the project. The SIP participant will be expected to produce at least 12 social media posts (1 per month), which could include photos, videos, and written content. Qualifications: United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien. Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award. Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the NPS site location. The applicant must be available to participate for 52 Weeks in order to be considered and participate. Preferred Qualifications: 1. comfortable serving outdoors year-round in South Florida (i.e., able to tolerate being outdoors in extreme heat and humidity, wind, rain, among abundant biting/stinging insects) 2. an experienced diver with Advanced Open Water training from an accredited institution (e.g. PADI, NAUI, SSI etc.) and/or AAUS certification. 3. able to ride on motorboats in varying sea states without succumbing to motion sickness. The SIP participant may be asked to assist the captain with tasks (training provided) such as mooring, anchoring, and proper distribution of loads. If permission is provided, the SIP participant may be offered the opportunity to acquire MOCC certification and operate NPS vessels. 4. in good physical condition such that he/she can routinely engage in physically demanding activities such as diving, swimming, picking up heavy debris and SCUBA tanks, getting in and out of boats, and walking in challenging coastal terrain. Position Setting: Biscayne is located in southern Miami-Dade, a rapidly growing suburb of Miami. The service will be conducted mostly outside. Almost all service will require riding on a motor boat to access the project sites. Much of the job will be done underwater. Ocean temperatures vary year-round, ranging from about 75 to 88 degrees. Vehicle and Driver's License Requirements: Applicant must have a valid driver's license to drive a government vehicle. A personal vehicle is REQUIRED for this position. Housing: Park housing is NOT available. The SIP participant will be responsible for finding housing in the nearby area. Recruiting from local universities may be needed to find a local candidate who can commute to the park. The rental market within southern Miami-Dade county is currently quite high and there is limited availability of single-bedroom apartments. A most-probable situation would be one in which the SIP participant found roommates to live together in a multi-bedroom housing unit. Including utilities, it is reasonable to expect a minimum of $1200 per month, but actual costs could be much higher. NPS housing at nearby Everglades may be an option.
