The Operations /Well Planning Geologist is an integral part of the New Wells Solutions team, supporting the Gulf of America Paleogene development.
The Geologist will work within a multi-disciplinary team to plan and execute wells, focusing initially on the Kaskida area. The role involves ensuring that all wells are planned and executed safely, in compliance with regulations, and according to BP’s New Wells Common Process and standards for Safety and Operational Risk Management. This position requires effective collaboration, communication, and leadership across subsurface and wells teams at various organizational levels.
Education: A master’s degree in Geology or a related field or equivalent experience with bachelor’s degree and relevant industry experience will also be considered.
Essential Experience and Job Requirements:
Ideally, 12+ years of relevant industry experience, predominantly acquired in geological operations environments.
Essential industry experience in well planning, operations geology, and well-site geology, along with a robust understanding of drilling operations, pore pressure, and mudlogging.
Competence in geological, seismic, and petrophysical log interpretation, as well as workstation skills (Petrel interpretative software) are essential.
Demonstrate a strong passion for well planning and execution.
Experience in Paleogene deep water development wells in the Gulf of America is preferred.
Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills.
Well Planning:
Describe overburden, including mapping, well log correlations, and recommending new data.
Optimize wellbore trajectory with geophysicists and drilling engineers.
Liaise with Asset Geoscientists for well planning activities and objectives.
Generate prognosis and identify subsurface-related drilling issues.
Integrate with pore pressure specialists to determine drilling margin and assist in creating pre-drill risk registers.
Well Operations:
Lead the NWS efforts in late design activities in accordance with the BP well planning process, including the creation of the GOP prior to drilling and the preparation of subsurface reports post-drilling.
Conduct daily operational meetings with rig-based subsurface entities and present geological previews to ensure well planning and execution.
Participate in well-on-paper exercises, engage specialty vendors early in the process, and ensure collaboration during hole section previews and reviews.
Support the wellsite geologist by attending daily and as-needed operational calls, providing up-to-date information and offset data, and facilitating collaboration between Subsurface and Wells to safely meet all well objectives.
Oversee the efficient delivery of the data acquisition program and manage communication and information dissemination with Vendor Co-owners.
Post Well:
Support successful End-of-Well Report completion, ensuring the report meets the expectations of the New Wells Common Process.
Capture and document all post well key findings in the corporate database and share in appropriate technical venues.
Ensure all data is finalized and electronically captured in the corporate regional data store and hard data copy is distributed accordingly to collaborators.
Support root cause analysis for any Non-Productive Time (NPT) event related to subsurface operations and ensure these takeaways are distributed through the appropriate venues and collaborators.
