Summary: Under the supervision of the Child Development Specialist, the teacher is responsible for providing a stimulating environment for the growth, well-being and development of the children, and the creation and implementation of lesson plans that prepare children for their next educational experience.
Responsibilities
- Classroom Environment: Provide a safe, age-appropriate, developmentally enriching educational environment that meets Early Head Start standards. Select materials and arrange the room to support learning and developmental needs. Establish a positive routine and simple rules understood by children and adults. Verbally engage with infants and toddlers throughout the day. Help children develop self-identity, independence and emotional skills, and model mutual respect. Follow written policies and regulations established by the Center, Health Department and granting agency. Report needs for repairs or replacements of classroom supplies and equipment to the supervisor. Manage all elements of the classroom environment including movement of children, cots, small furniture and daily supplies.
- Curriculum: Plan developmentally appropriate lessons and activities. Develop written weekly lesson plans utilizing Creative Curriculum and Early Learning Literacy Standards, and written individualized education plans. Provide daily activities that encourage questioning, probing and problem-solving. Stimulate creativity and provide experiences that encourage exploration and expression. Help children use language and social cues to communicate thoughts and feelings. Physically engage children throughout the day, including gross motor play and music and movement.
- Assessment and Documentation: Assess each child’s development and document progress throughout the year using Teaching Strategies GOLD. Observe daily (at least one observation per child per day), formally assess three times per year, and plan for subsequent development using GOLD data. Use curriculum and assessment data to enhance development and make appropriate referrals as needed. Maintain required records (e.g., daily meal counts, attendance).
- Parent Involvement: Encourage and coach parents, establish positive relationships, and promote parent participation in Center activities. Plan at least two parent conferences per year and two home visits per year. Communicate with parents about classroom activities, curriculum, and child progress. Partner with parents and classroom staff to involve them in activities and socialization events.
- Professional Development: Pursue ongoing professional development. Participate in program-specific trainings, outside workshops, and classes related to child development, at-risk children, and special needs.
Secondary Duties
- Maintain confidentiality of participant information and provide support to diverse backgrounds. Conduct outreach and recruitment. Work independently and as part of a team. Build relationships with parents and support staff. Maintain good communication with parents and document contacts. Support volunteers and welcome visitors. Uphold the vision, mission and values of St. Vincent de Paul. Attend trainings and meetings as needed. Assist with and attend special events. Create an atmosphere of care and respect for staff, volunteers and clients. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma with 90-hour Child Care Certificate and Infant-Toddler 45 Hour Certificate, required.
- 1 year supervised classroom experience with children aged zero through three years, required.
- Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, preferred.
- CDA, preferred.

TYPE OF WORK: MEDIUM WORK — Lifting up to 50 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects up to 25 pounds.
