This position is responsible for dental assistant activities at the Gilchrist County Health Department and occasionally backup dental assistant support at the Dixie and Levy dental programs. This position may also provide support to the front desk clerical staff if needed.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Dentist during exams and perform expanded functions as defined by guidelines provided by the State of Florida during patient treatment.
  • Make radiographs and/or intraoral photos of intraoral structures.
  • Maintain dental equipment including daily, weekly and monthly requirements per manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Responsible for breakdown, cleaning, disinfecting and setup for the next patient of the dental operatory.
  • Prepare dental instruments for sterilization and storage after sterilization.
  • Communicate with parents regarding care that is planned and assist with scheduling appointments for further treatment needs.
  • Monitor supply inventory and place orders when inventory is low.
  • Provide backup front desk support when not with patients and as needed, including answering phones, scheduling client appointments, preparing new patient packets, copying/highlighting forms for new charts, sending recall notices, confirming appointments, and verifying paperwork in client records.
  • Request assistance from supervisor for issues related to policies and procedures of the dental program.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Basic computer skills.
  • Knowledge of sterilization equipment.
  • Knowledge of dental x-ray/processor equipment.
  • Knowledge of dental lab equipment and expanded dental functions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum: Dental Assistant Certificate; Expanded Functions Certificate.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel with reliable transportation.
  • Experience with dental x-ray.
  • Willing to work a flex schedule at or between Dixie, Gilchrist and Levy County Health Departments.
