Job Description Summary: Responsible for the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Responsibilities

  1. In compliance with SOPs, perform all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set-up, donor monitoring and donor disconnect.
  2. In compliance with SOPs and FDA guidelines, perform venipuncture on donors to begin pheresis process.
  3. Evaluate vein performance of the donor to identify possible problems; make necessary corrections to expedite donation time and ensure product quality and donor safety. Ensure donation process is efficient and make adjustments to create a positive donor experience.
  4. Educate new donors on use of therapeutic products made from donated plasma. Explain the screening process, tests performed, appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition and other information pertinent to the donor. Answer donor questions timely, accurately and professionally.
  5. Maintain alertness to any donor reactions and assist with reactions or notify appropriate staff.
  6. Use Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) to record incidents during the pheresis process (machine alerts, alarms, volume variances, donor adverse events).
  7. Perform calibrations and verify maintenance as outlined in SOPs. Respond to and resolve complex equipment alarms or donor issues.
  8. Troubleshoot equipment failures. Create incident documentation, remove and/or replace equipment from service.
  9. Monitor donor flow on the donor floor to ensure continuous turnover. Alert Group Leader or Supervisor of donor flow issues.
  10. Collect arm samples or whole blood samples from donors for testing.
  11. Ensure accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system as per SOPs.
  12. Understand policies and procedures associated with hyperimmune programs at the center if applicable.
  13. Maintain a clean, efficient work environment and ensure sufficient operating supplies and forms are available. Follow all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures. Promote safety in all actions.
  14. Maintain confidentiality of all personnel, donor and center information.
  15. May be cross-trained in other areas to meet business needs.
  16. Bilingual skills may be required, at the organization’s discretion, to meet business needs.
  17. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

  • Internal CSL Employees/Applicants must have successfully completed the CSL Plasma Phlebotomy training.
  • External candidates must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a phlebotomist; one year of experience is preferable.
  • Minimum twelve (12) months experience in a medical or health care environment preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working Conditions (physical & mental requirements)

  • Ability to complete routine forms or conduct routine oral communications.
  • Ability to understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions.
  • Must be able to see and speak with customers and observe equipment operation.
  • Occasionally perform tasks while standing and walking up to 100% of the time.
  • Reach, bend, kneel and have high level of manual dexterity.
  • Occasionally be required to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Frequently exposed to hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures and blood-borne pathogens.
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment while performing specific tasks or in certain areas.
  • Required to work overtime and extended hours to support center operational needs.
