POSITION SUMMARY: Provides quality service and stewardship by ensuring optimal support of laboratory testing activities through timely, accurate sample collection and preparation. Deals with and resolves all customer-related issues in a friendly, courteous, professional, and timely manner. Effectively communicates and escalates barriers, opportunities, and other department needs to the lab supervisor in real-time. Must demonstrate the ability to assume a leadership role as the designee of the laboratory leadership team, in problem-solving and promoting organizational goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the lab supervisor in the coordination of daily inpatient, outpatient phlebotomy, and other pre-analytical needs, staff scheduling, processing, shipping of patients’ specimens, as applicable: EKG and POC testing, and reporting, filling in as needed all department’s shifts and throughout Health First Lab locations.
  • Comply with all Health First, HF Laboratory policies and procedures, along with all pertinent federal and state accreditation agency requirements.
  • Comply with policies, procedures, processes in the collection and processing of patient specimens, and provision of patient services, including offsite phlebotomy services as applicable.
  • Meet and show commitment to continuously improve goals and performance improvement metrics developed to provide quality patient care.
  • Assure valid patient results as evidenced by zero patient or sample identification errors in the pre-analytical and post-analytical phases of laboratory procedures per evaluation period.
  • Demonstrate the appropriate skill sets as determined by the Annual Competency Assessments.
  • Possess basic computer skills pertinent to job performance and availability to meet departmental staffing demands (holidays, weekends, coverage for illness or emergencies, reduced operations, increased workload).
  • Comply with the Health First I-Care values and demonstrate effective communication with co-workers and management, including proper escalation when necessary.
  • Assume scheduled shift responsibility when coverage is unavailable and adjust the posted schedule as needed, arranging changes in coverage with staff and informing the supervisor.
  • Mentor co-workers and students’ technical development and optimize department efficiency by adjusting staffing schedules and monitoring Inpatient, Outpatient Phlebotomy and Support Services Operations.
  • Perform Point of Care (POC) Testing on the lab menu at the assigned site, correctly and in a timely manner, if applicable.
  • Participate in Proficiency Testing as determined by state regulations, if applicable.
  • Assist with oversight and performance of lab registration, insurance eligibilities, authorizations, and payments, if applicable.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Phlebotomy Training Program Diploma
    • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Work Experience: Two (2) years of experience in venipuncture and specimen processing
  • Licensure: Valid Driver’s License and clean Motor Vehicle Record
  • Certification: National Phlebotomy Certification from an accredited National Phlebotomy Agency
  • EKG certified
  • AHA BLS Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintained
  • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
    • Strong computer skills
    • Excellent customer service skills
    • Good oral and written communication skills
    • Ability to prioritize and organize work
    • Must be able to cover alternative shifts, weekends, and holidays to meet customer needs

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work Experience: Three (3) years of experience in venipuncture and lab specimen

Physical Requirements

  • Majority of time involves sitting or standing; occasional walking, bending, and stooping
  • Long periods of computer use
  • Light work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 20 pounds
  • Exposure to varied temperatures, air quality, lighting and/or low to moderate noise; may require travel to various facilities
