Hours: 6:30am-5pm. Rotating days, weekends, and holidays.

Position Summary

This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). It may be required to provide coverage at multiple locations. This role is responsible for the collection and receipt of biological specimens into the department, their proper entry into the company’s computer system, the preparation of samples for analytical testing and/or the distribution of these specimens to the proper analytical area. This includes responsibility for pre- and post-analytical testing. The position may also perform specified analytical testing as assigned. Follows the Code of Conduct and applicable policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, and professional standards.

Core Functions

  • Specimen collection and general laboratory specimen processing or referral laboratory processing. Ensure correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity for all ages. In In Office Phlebotomy locations, manage client relationships within Compliance to meet needs and Sonora Quest’s business objectives.
  • Enter and verify patient demographics, location, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, clinical information, and all other data on requisitions and orders. Verify accuracy and appropriateness of specimens. Aliquot and label specimens; deliver to the technical area or prepare samples for transport. May assist in monitoring workflow and training of new employees.
  • Focus on quality: ensure work is accurate and complete; document per site protocol; follow established methods; maintain familiarity with procedures; initiate computer-generated reports for patient reporting and quality assurance; participate in department quality initiatives; maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates.
  • Participate in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies; minimize waste; contribute to cost-saving initiatives; basic knowledge of billing; maintain an error-free work environment.
  • Communicate professionally with internal and external customers; work across areas/departments/shifts as assigned; resolve basic service issues; attend meetings and stay informed via communications.
  • Acknowledge and understand the importance of patient rights and HIPAA privacy.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum age 18.
  • High School diploma or equivalent may be required depending on state regulatory requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of department resource materials.
  • Completion of a phlebotomy program or phlebotomy experience.
  • Ability to obtain DHS Fingerprinting Certification or current certification.
  • Valid state driver’s license where employed and eligibility for company auto insurance (location dependent).
  • Flexibility to travel to multiple locations; ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime; may be required to work on-call duties.
  • Career ladder progression per policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual (Spanish/English).
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Additional related education and/or experience.
