Heavy Equipment Operator or Trainee / Arizona City

Pinal County is hiring for Heavy Equipment Operator or Trainee in the Public Works Department. This recruitment covers both the Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee and the Heavy Equipment Operator positions. The starting salary and pay grade vary by classification.

Overview

Perform entry-level to skilled work in the operation of specialized trucks and motorized equipment used for a variety of job functions in the Public Works Department (PWD). Trainee positions transfer into the Heavy Equipment Operator Series after required certifications and training. Pre-employment screening is required including motor vehicle record check, background check, and drug testing for safety-sensitive roles. VISA sponsorship is not available. This position is located at the Public Works Yard.

Job Summary

  1. Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee – Pay Grade 05 – Starting salary $34,500. Perform entry-level work under close supervision, operating equipment and tools in accordance with safety regulations. This trainee may transfer into the Heavy Equipment Operator series upon certification and training completion.
  2. Heavy Equipment Operator – Pay Grade 07 – Starting salary $39,411. Perform skilled and semi-skilled operation of heavy equipment under basic supervision, maintaining safety and efficiency on projects.

Typical Duties

  • Operate a variety of specialized equipment to maintain roads, drainage systems, and related infrastructure in accordance with safety regulations.
  • Operate PWD vehicles and equipment, including light trucks, water trucks, mowers, loaders, backhoes, graders, dozers, end dumps, and belly dumps as assigned.
  • Perform manual labor tasks, repair potholes, clear debris from culverts and roadways, and move/set barricades.
  • Maintain daily logs, reports, and maintenance records; perform routine maintenance on vehicles and report mechanical issues.
  • Follow safety rules, report hazards, and assist with traffic control and emergency procedures as needed.
  • Cross-train in PWD work methods and safety procedures; promote accountability, commitment, and teamwork.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues and restricted County information.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee:
    • High school diploma or GED or equivalent experience
    • Valid Arizona Driver’s License within 30 days of hire
    • Must obtain Class A Arizona CDL with tanker endorsements within 5 months of employment
  • Heavy Equipment Operator:
    • Three (3) years of construction/maintenance/equipment experience or one (1) year as a Pinal County Operator (Trainee)
    • Must obtain Class A Arizona CDL with tanker endorsements within 5 months of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • OSHA HAZWOPER certification; First Aid/ CPR/AED
  • Basic Work Zone & Traffic Control (Flagger) certification
  • CPR/First Aid Certified; Valid CDL Permit

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The work is very heavy and may require lifting, pushing, or pulling substantial weights. Work is outdoors in varying weather conditions. May be on-call.
