Overview

Mechanic-Heavy Equipment at Fort Irwin, CA. This full-time position supports the National Training Center Training Support Contract (NTCTSC) at the National Training Center (NTC). NTCTSC integrates live, virtual, and constructive (LVC) training support to strengthen military capabilities. The role maintains Government Furnished and Contractor Acquired heavy equipment for V2X and its subcontractors at Fort Irwin.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnosis and Repair: Identify mechanical issues, determine repair scope, and repair heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, loaders, dozers, cranes).
  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance (oil changes, filter replacements, inspections) to prevent breakdowns.
  • System Repair: Service engines, transmissions, hydraulic, electrical, and airbrake systems.
  • Component Overhaul: Disassemble, repair, and reassemble major components (engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems).
  • Part Selection and Ordering: Advise on parts and order those required for repairs.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
  • Welding and Fabricating: Perform minor welding, brazing, and fabricate or install custom equipment.
  • Safety: Ensure repairs meet safety standards and equipment is operated safely.
  • Training: Instruct operators on equipment operation and servicing.
  • Travel: May travel to worksites to repair large equipment.
  • Following blueprints and manuals: Read and interpret operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.

Qualifications / Skills

  • Technical Skills: Strong understanding of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems. Diagnostic skills to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and resolve complex heavy equipment issues.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy objects, stand for long periods, and work in varied environments.
  • Communication Skills: Effective communication with operators and fellow mechanics.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent

Required Skills

  • 4 years direct experience in heavy equipment repair
  • Advanced knowledge of heavy equipment repair and shop safety
  • Candidate must be able to provide complete maintenance and troubleshooting of heavy equipment
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Proficient computer skills for repairs and diagnostics on heavy equipment
  • Strong personal communication and office skills
  • May be required to travel and comply with OSHA and V2X safety policies
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to enhance customer satisfaction
  • Must be able to obtain and/or maintain a US Secret Security Clearance
  • Desired Skills: ASE certifications; CDL preferred
  • Existing US SECRET Security Clearance
  • Experience with MAXIMO work orders
