Figure is an AI robotics company developing a general-purpose humanoid robot. Our humanoid robot, Figure 02, is designed for commercial and home tasks. Based in San Jose, CA, we require in-office collaboration 5 days a week. It's time to build.

We are seeking a Failure Analysis (FA) Engineer responsible for analyzing hardware failures during product development and field use to ensure our products meet reliability targets. The ideal candidate will have a strong FA background, comprehensive skills, and the ability to perform end-to-end failure analysis at component (e.g., PCBAs, actuators, battery cells), module (e.g., hand), and system (robot) levels.

Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical cross-sectioning of PCBAs
  • Perform optical inspections (Keyence equipment preferred)
  • Perform SEM/EDS analysis and interpret results
  • Perform CT X-ray imaging and interpret data (VGStudio experience preferred)
  • Perform FTIR analysis and interpret results
  • Perform Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and interpret results
  • Disassemble DUTs and perform fault isolation
  • Set up hardware failure analysis lab
  • Triage failures and develop FA SOPs
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify root causes of hardware failures
  • Coordinate hardware failure analysis at the component level with vendors
  • Utilize DMM, lock-in IR thermography, oscilloscope, probe station, function generator, IV tracing, or TDR for PCB level analysis

Requirements:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in hardware failure analysis in automotive, consumer electronics, aerospace, or robotics industries
  • Knowledge of mechanical cross-sectioning, optical microscopy, SEM/EDS, CT X-ray, FTIR, and Confocal Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (CSAM)
  • Deep understanding of failure mechanisms such as fatigue, ductile/brittle failure, adhesion/cohesion issues, contamination, intermetallics, and corrosion

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Experience with GCMS
  • Experience with various etching techniques
  • Experience with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy
  • Experience with Differential Scanning Calorimetry and TMA
  • Experience with Gel Permeation Chromatography
