Nature of Work
Part-time EMT - Basic / Paramedic (EMS Division): The primary function is to respond to medical or traumatic emergencies and deliver exceptional care to patients. We are committed to protecting the community by promoting an environment of public safety within our response area. Providing emergency medical services requires working long hours under intense, fatiguing, and highly dangerous and stressful conditions. The candidate should be capable of carrying out the essential functions of pre-hospital care promptly and efficiently. The Part-Time EMT Basic / Paramedic will respond to both emergency and non-emergency calls in an EMS Rescue Unit; may ride to a local hospital when assisting a transporting agency. The role is limited to EMS functions within the Medic Division. Part-time employees must maintain required license CEU training to maintain ADPH EMT / Paramedic license. Training is not performed while in pay status with Montgomery Fire / Rescue.
Part-time Fire Inspector (Bureau of Inspections): The primary role is to conduct routine commercial life safety inspections and assist with other functions within the Bureau of Inspections. Inspect commercial construction to enforce safety standards and provide safety to life and property from fire and other hazards.
Part-time Firefighter (Administrative Division): Part-time candidates may assist with duties within the Administrative Division including Supply, Maintenance, IT, Fleet Maintenance and other areas. They will assist with routine daily station or office cleaning, administrative functions and check-off of apparatus and equipment. Part-time employees will maintain required firefighter l/ll CEU training and may attend training offered by Montgomery Fire/Rescue at no cost; they will not be paid for training outside company/station training. Willingness to attend Division of Training courses may affect pay status.
Montgomery Fire/Rescue operates 15 stations on a 24-hour basis and responds to about 40,000 calls per year. Successful applicants can be placed at any station based on staffing needs. Full-time shifts are 24 hours on, 48 hours off. Part-time shifts may be 8, 12, or 24 hours with availability on nights, weekends, and some holidays.
Starting salary (EMS Division): EMT-Basic / Firefighter I/II $20/hr (part-time may work up to 29 hours per week). EMS Division (EMT-Paramedic / Firefighter I/II) $33.50/hr (part-time may work up to 29 hours per week). Fire Inspector (EMT-Basic / Inspector I) $20/hr (part-time may work up to 29 hours per week). Administrative Division (EMT-Basic / Firefighter I/II) $20/hr (part-time may work up to 29 hours per week).
*Part-Time Firefighter/EMT-Basic/Paramedic applicants may later apply to transition into a full-time position when available.
Minimum Qualifications
PRE-EMPLOYMENT MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Applicants shall be at least 18 years old at the time of employment. Employment is conditioned upon passing a pre-employment drug test using hair, nails, and/or urine samples.
Must possess a high school diploma or GED. A passing GPA from an SAC0S-accredited college or university may substitute for the high school diploma or GED; internet colleges or trade school coursework are not accepted.
Must be of good moral character with no record of misdemeanor or felony involving violence or moral turpitude. Must have a valid driver’s license or ability to obtain one and a clean driving record.
Must be Firefighter I/II Certified (must complete 80-hour recertification if lapsed). Fire service requires maintaining current status with Alabama Fire College, minimum of 30 training hours per year. Email certification@alabamafirecollege.org to check status. Must be currently employed with or retired from a full-time Fire Service within the State of Alabama within the last 12 months or have CPAT on file or complete the CPAT as required by the State of Alabama. Kind of Examination / Process
Applicants will be pre-screened via application and minimum qualifications questionnaire. Qualified candidates will be referred to Montgomery Fire Rescue. New hires must meet hiring requirements including drug screening, background check, polygraph, psychological and medical evaluations (NFPA 1582), and CPAT. Before assignment, paid orientation of three 8-hour shifts is required. Part-time candidates are employed on an on-call temporary at-will basis.
