The Syracuse City School District is undergoing a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school with the skills needed to be ready for college and career. The School Board and Syracuse community have charged the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and he is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of school leaders and teachers to partner with him in moving the district toward its goals. The Syracuse City School District represents 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving 19,000+ students Pre-K-12 of whom 77% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 18% are served by the Office of Special Education and 78% are students of color.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Reporting to the Supervising Director of ENL, World Languages and Bilingual Education, the Native American Instructor ensures that all their students achieve ambitious academic outcomes. The Native American Instructor must effectively:

  • Enroll Native American students in the program and provide program information to District schools and families.
  • Communicate with students, teachers, families, and support staff to improve student academic and social skill areas.
  • Assist in compiling, writing, and disseminating cultural and academically relevant information to district personnel and the general public concerning the program. This would include flyers to parents, newsletters, news releases to news and community organizations.
  • Assist district personnel to increase student's cultural understanding by providing teachers and other staff with factual, culturally appropriate information for presentation to all students.
  • Write and deliver lesson and unit plans that reflect the goals and objectives of the Title VI grant.
  • Work as a member of a team to provide quality academic and cultural enrichment for Native American students.
  • Assist in the ordering of supplies and materials relevant to the annual goals and objectives of the program.
  • Set-up and maintenance of student and program records on-site including but not limited to attendance and academic progress of participants.
  • Plan, implement and supervise field trips and special community events.
  • Prepare and facilitate Parent-Student Committee meetings and any related activities and reports.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The Native American Program Instructor should have:

  • a strong background in, and knowledge of the culture, history, and beliefs of Native Americans.
  • personal experience in effectively working and communicating directly with Native American students and adults and have a genuine interest in the teaching and preserving Native American heritage.
  • experience in working with students, adults, and school personnel in order to facilitate the implementation of the Native American Program within the local school district.
  • A bachelor's degree in education or related field is desirable.
  • Must own transportation to accommodate services at different SCSD sites.
  • Preference will be given to candidates of Native American descent as stipulated in the Indian Education Program guidelines.
  • Training and or experience with Culturally Relevant Education (preferred)
  • Prior demonstration of exemplary attendance is expected of any candidate for hire.
  • Once offered, you will be required to declare that all previous obligations with an employing school district have been met and you are not seeking this position with the intent of resigning from a previous commitment in which you have not served.
  • The successful candidate will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, at the cost of $102.50 to the candidate.
