Job Summary

Faculty are professional educators responsible for fulfilling the Texas Southmost College’s (TSC) mission, vision, values, and goals by providing a quality education for all students. The relationship of the faculty member to the student is that of leader, teacher, advisor, and facilitator of learning. Faculty members are accountable to the College President through a chain of command and must adhere to college policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Improve student success by creating an optimal learning environment, providing high-quality instruction and advising, developing learning outcomes, assessing student progress, and engaging in ongoing professional development.
  • Manage learning environments by developing accurate syllabi, maintaining attendance records, submitting grades, providing feedback, and conducting classes punctually as per schedule.
  • Deliver effective instruction by developing curriculum in line with college policies, considering individual student differences, utilizing digital learning tools, and clearly communicating expectations.
  • Enhance learning by integrating real-life situations, fostering critical thinking, interdisciplinary skills, teamwork, and collaborating with employers when appropriate.
  • Collaborate on developing measurable learning outcomes, including the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) core curriculum objectives.
  • Assess student learning through well-designed assessments, sequencing learning opportunities, and aligning assessments with learning objectives.
  • Promote continual improvement by revising curricula, participating in institutional effectiveness programs, sharing best practices, and engaging in research.
  • Create a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active learning, student effort, and faculty-student interaction.
  • Support student learning by referring students to support services and maintaining availability during office hours.
  • Pursue professional development to stay current in the field, maintain credentials, and contribute to academic research or publications.
  • Participate in service activities within the college and community, including serving on committees and engaging in professional organizations.
  • Teach classes based on varied schedules and at different sites as needed, including dual credit courses.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and respect for diversity among students, colleagues, and the community.
  • Attend work regularly, report punctually, and follow the work schedule, which may include evenings and weekends.
  • Use interpersonal skills and sound judgment in completing duties and responsibilities.
  • Complete all required training and support the college’s strategic goals and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Physical Demands

    Employees must frequently stand, and occasionally walk, sit, handle objects, reach, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and taste or smell. Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. Vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
