The Assistant Director for Intramural Sports is responsible for the leadership, development, and management of the Intramural Sports programs at Syracuse University’s Barnes Center. The Intramural Sports program includes 30 sports activities and hosts more than 5,000 participants annually. The Assistant Director supervises 2 full-time staff members and approximately 70 student staff. The Assistant Director manages an operating budget of $75,000 and coordinates and implements appropriate risk management and compliance plans, as well as training for student staff.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Sports Management or related field preferred.
  • 1st Aid/CPR Instructor certifications.
  • Three (3) plus years of experience working in college/university recreation or related field including experience managing Intramural Sports programs.
  • Experience developing and supervising student staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and promote inclusive intramural sport programs.
  • Experience with managing the operations of multiple program areas.

Responsibilities

  • Provides overall direction and supervision to Intramural Sports program.
  • Developing, reviewing, revising and enforcing policies and procedures related to intramural sports
  • Development of intramural leagues including creation of new leagues and/or special tournaments
  • Plans, develops, and leads officials training clinics
  • Maintain records for all league standings and track student participation rates across all sports
  • Collaborate with facilities and other Barnes Center recreation units to review and enhance program operations (including space utilization and emergency response planning)
  • Manage disciplinary proceedings in coordination with departmental procedures and in partnership with Office of Community Standards
  • Serve as primary risk manager for Intramural Sports
  • Supervise 2 full-time staff members
  • Oversee hiring, training, scheduling, evaluation and supervision of 70+ student employees (supervisors, officials, and intramural assistants)
  • Evaluate program effectiveness to determine student satisfaction, engagement and program impact; Utilize assessment data to inform programming enhancements and future initiatives
  • Assist with the assessment, evaluation, and mitigation of risk for intramural programs and facilities
  • Assist with the marketing and promotion of Intramural programs
  • Develop and manage program operating budget of over $75,000 in accordance with university and departmental policies.
  • Accurately forecasts, tracks and records program expenditures.
  • Oversees purchase, maintenance and inventory of program equipment.
  • Ensure payroll activities are performed accurately, timely and in accordance with university policies.
  • Assist with management of recreational facilities and recreation programs as needed.
