Unit Med Surg/ TELE - Inpatient Surgical - 3rd floor. Beds 48. Nurse:Patient Ratios 1:4-6 Nights 1:5-6. LPNs available; virtual admission and discharge nurses to assist. Primary care nursing model is frequently used.
Responsibilities
- Provide inpatient medical-surgical and telemetry nursing care on the 3rd floor with 48 beds across two buildings.
- Maintain nurse:patient ratios as specified; collaborate with LPNs and virtual admission/discharge staff.
- Assist with common diagnoses and procedures listed: neuro- laminectomy, cervical fusion, LESI, abdominal surgeries, hernia repair, joint replacements (hips/knees); PICC, TPN, lipids; fem pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, BKA, AKA; DM (dialysis unit on 3rd floor); PCA, epidurals, IV antibiotics, chronic pain (narcotics), sepsis, urgent OR cases.
- Understand titration of drips per protocol (e.g., heparin) and know reversal drugs (narcan); experience with TPN/Lipids; narcotic management.
- One year of surgical experience required; knowledge of sepsis management and PCA pumps.
- Read and interpret telemetry strips with support from telemonitoring staff; RN interpretation of strips with a tele monitor tech available; Draeger Charge Nurse/House Supervisor oversight.
- Schedule: 3-12 hour shifts; discuss block scheduling; schedules published 6 weeks in advance; every other weekend; holidays in rotation.
- Floating: float to like units; if floated to higher acuity, work as a help without taking a patient load.
- Unit support: CNAs available but may be pulled to sitter duties; night shift requires more CNA/RT/Equipment support for CPAP, Bipap, high-flow, and vents; scrubs color is black.
- Orientation: 1-2 twelve-hour shift on hire; includes comps and computer-based modules; first day long orientation (12-14 hours).
Qualifications
- Active RN license; BLS; NIHSS.
- One year of surgical experience; total joint experience preferred; experience with PCA pumps, sepsis management, TPN/Lipids; narcotic management; ability to titrate drips per protocol.
- Understanding of telemetry interpretation and sepsis management; ability to work with telemonitoring tech support.
