Overview

VOALA is a non-profit human services organization serving people in need, strengthening families, and building communities. VOALA provides a variety of social services in the Los Angeles area, including Head Start and Early Head Start programs, veterans’ services, homeless shelters, low-income housing, and drug and alcohol rehabilitation. Head Start/ Early Head Start: we work with children ages 0–5 and their families to support a smooth transition into kindergarten, including health services, nutrition, and developmental screenings. Cities served include: Carson, Commerce, Compton, Culver City, Del Rey, East Los Angeles, El Segundo, Harbor City, Hawthorne, South Central Los Angeles, Lomita, Lynwood, Mar Vista, Newhall, North Hollywood, Pacoima, Palms, Paramount, Rancho Palos Verdes, San Fernando, San Pedro, Santa Clarita, Shadow Hills, South Central Los Angeles, South LA, Studio City, Sun Valley, Sunland, Sylmar, Torrance, Tujunga, Val Verde, Valencia, Valley Village, Wilmington.

Job Summary and Purpose

The Head Start Teacher Aide is a critical team member who is employed at school sites daily, supports staff, children, and volunteers, and represents the organization. Must ensure health, safety, and nutrition guidelines are followed.

Responsibilities

• Provide excellent customer service by serving meals to children in a professional, courteous manner.
• Prepare meals and replenish food items during meal times.
• Communicate with central kitchen, Site Supervisor, and teaching teams on menu changes, allergies, and food counts to ensure accuracy.
• Monitor food allergies and alert kitchen and site staff of concerns.
• Post monthly menus and update as needed.
• Assist classrooms and teachers during meal times.
• Maintain sanitation and disinfecting practices; prevent cross-contamination.
• Sanitize and restock kitchen and materials, perform inventory, and order supplies as applicable.
• Contribute to a physical environment compliant with licensing, health and safety needs for children.
• Ensure site staff and parent volunteers follow CACFP rules and monitor allergies.
• Other duties as may be required to fulfill program mission.

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

• Must pass fingerprint clearance and background checks (criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications).
• Proof at the time of hire.
• TB clearance within 6 months prior; Annual influenza vaccination (Aug 1 – Dec 1); Pertussis and measles immunizations.
• Health screening at the time of employment.
• Ability to interact with children in a busy environment including:
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Frequently kneel and squat.
• Move quickly when needed.

Education

• High School Diploma/GED and certification of 12 ECE/CD units or enrolled in/completed apprenticeship certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• 24 units in ECE or CD, including 3 units of infant/toddler for EHS.
• Assistant Teacher Permit or higher.
• Food handler certificate.
• Certifications in public health, nutrition education, food safety, or related field.
• Work experience in Head Start/Early Head Start programs.
• Promotes nutrition curriculum, activities and initiatives.
• Bilingual English/Spanish or other language (e.g., Armenian or Farsi).
