Instructor Pool Mathematics and Statistics UC Berkeley Extension

Overview UC Berkeley Extension (UNEX) invites applications for a pool of qualified instructors to teach Mathematics and Statistics online for our Sciences, Mathematics, and Biotechnology department. Courses may be offered online asynchronously or synchronously.
Position Details
Percent time: Part-time by agreement on a course-by-course basis.
Anticipated start: Some appointments may begin as early as the spring semester.
Review timeline: Applications are reviewed as needs arise; the applicant pool remains in place for 9–12 months. Those interested in remaining beyond the advertised closing date must reapply.
Position duration: Course length varies by subject, format, and credits. Fall/spring courses typically 7–17 weeks; summer courses typically 8 weeks. Asynchronous Start Anytime courses may be 6–18 months. Further assignments depend on program needs and funding.

Position Description UC Berkeley Extension is the continuing education branch of the University of California, Berkeley. UNEX serves professional and continuing education goals and aims to extend UC Berkeley's research and scholarship to a global community, increase access to higher education for non-traditional students, and support the workforce. We seek qualified instructors with current subject matter expertise in Mathematics and Statistics to teach online courses each year.
Courses Are Offered Online
Online instruction may be asynchronous (Canvas) or synchronous (Zoom).
Most synchronous live online courses are offered in the evening and on weekends (Pacific Time).
Course Subjects Qualified applicants with expertise in Mathematics and Statistics are sought. For a complete list of courses and descriptions, refer to the departmental link below.
Mathematics: Analytic Geometry, Calculus I, Calculus II, College Algebra, Linear Algebra, Math for Management, Multivariable Calculus, Pre-Calculus
Statistics: Introduction to Statistics
Other Mathematics or Statistics course areas may be requested; please specify in your cover letter or teaching statement.

Synchronous Online Teaching Experience (Zoom)
Asynchronous Online Teaching Experience (via a learning management system)
General Duties The department seeks candidates who support student success through inclusive curriculum, classroom environment, and pedagogy. Duties vary by instruction method.
Synchronous instruction (live online): syllabus development; assignment development; lesson planning; preparing and submitting required texts and course materials; updating Canvas; delivering lectures, presentations, and activities for required hours.
Asynchronous instruction (Start Anytime): review syllabus and online content; use Canvas classroom tools; request training as needed from Program Director or Department Director.
All instruction: complete mandated trainings; respond to student questions promptly; grade and post final grades; utilize Canvas, Zoom, Google Workspace, etc.; follow departmental policies and guidelines; respond to program requests in a timely manner.

Qualifications Basic qualifications

Doctorate degree or equivalent international degree
Additional Qualifications (required at start)
U.S.A. residency and USA work authorization: All work must be performed in the United States, whether in person or online. Applicants not holding US citizenship or permanent residency require valid US work authorization for the duration of employment. Visa sponsorship is not provided.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate degree or equivalent international degree in the course subject or related area
3+ years of professional or undergraduate teaching experience as primary instructor in the course subject
Experience teaching at a US college/university
Experience creating syllabi, learning objectives, lectures, activities, assignments, assessments, exams
Experience teaching online and/or developing online content
Strong conceptual communication and ability to support diverse learners
Proficiency with instructional technology (Canvas, Panopto, Zoom, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, etc.)
