Highway & Roads Market Sector Director Primary Responsibilities Market Sector Directors (MSD) drive our business within HDR’s matrix management structure. The Highway & Roads (H&R) market sector is the largest at HDR, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. The H&R market sector includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city, town and local roads, and bridge structures. Primary services include bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning and tolling services. An understanding of H&R clients, funding and revenue streams, and their governance structures is essential. The primary responsibilities are divided into three areas: Market leadership and business development (70%) Staff development (20%) Support to Operations (10%) Market Sector Directors set HDR’s strategy for growth in the market sector, working with region and area leadership to implement growth initiatives, develop staff, and achieve market sector booking, revenue and profit goals. They facilitate business strategies in coordination with leadership and manage communication across regions to execute growth and operating plans. In the US, HDR has ongoing contracts with nearly every state department of transportation and many local agencies; HDR is expanding to engage clients outside the US. HDR’s H&R professionals deliver expertise across bridge and highway design, traffic and transportation planning, construction management, and HDR services including advisory, environmental, strategic communications, facilities, and more. The Market Sector Director supports area development and client management while defining growth initiatives, coordinating best practices, and projecting HDR’s brand. They engage employees across the sector while reinforcing HDR’s image with clients and markets. Business Development Responsibilities The Market Sector Director leads marketplace assessment, supports local areas in determining HDR’s best approach, and helps win contracts. Responsibilities include cross-sector collaboration and driving market share growth. The Director leads an organization that interfaces with local area client development programs and area business development leads to: Oversee strategic vision and direction for the market sector, aligning technical/professional services with business group and operations leadership. Serve as Client Manager for selected key clients within the market sector. Engage in selected projects as Principal-In-Charge. Promote HDR services to clients within the market sector with client managers. Participate as a member of the Transportation Business Group Management Team. Collaborate with Regional Business Group Directors on area goals and market sector initiatives. Drive client development and pursuit processes with client managers and BD leaders. Support area and strategic pursuits through client relationship development and pursuit activities. Participate in industry associations and represent HDR in business and community organizations. Identify investments (acquisitions and technology) to maintain HDR’s leadership position. Monitor marketing capabilities and ensure alignment with goals. Develop relationships with industry counterparts and with senior client leadership. Lead strategic partnerships and HDR’s presence with industry organizations across regions. Staff Development The Director leads an organization that supports client service, growth, and staff development; they assist in identifying and recruiting future market sector employees. Key items include: Oversee Global Market Sector P&L in coordination with local area managers and coordinate work-sharing across departments. Drive technical excellence and coordinate staff to support project delivery and marketing. Coordinate staffing/recruiting plans and approve key hires. Participate in Annual Performance Conversations for key market sector leaders. Support to Operations Assist Regional Business Group Directors and area managers in delivering professional services for area projects. Responsibilities include guiding client management, monitoring market sector P&L, reviewing staff assignments, promoting work-sharing, ensuring project delivery, and supporting QA/QC programs. Monitor performance indicators (NFE/NFB/profit/Unbilled revenue/AR/losses/investments) and optimize resource use. Assist with contract reviews to ensure risk management, staffing, quality reviews and claims resolution. Promote QA/QC and share lessons learned. Qualifications Preferred Qualifications Minimum 20 years experience in planning/engineering in highway design or bridge design Professional engineering license or equivalent Current or past leadership positions within highway/road industry associations including AASHTO, IBTTA and others globally Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering or closely related field At least 12 years industry experience including leadership Strong written and verbal communication skills Strong client management and development skills with a proven leadership record Strong business skills including budgeting, staff and operations management Ability to analyze the marketplace and strategically position HDR Commitment to HDR’s employee-owned culture What We Believe HDR is our company.
