Highway & Roads Market Sector Director at HDR. Market Sector Directors (MSD) drive HDR’s business within the Highway & Roads (H&R) market sector, the largest sector in the company, and represent services including bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning and tolling services. HDR’s H&R sector engages with state DOTs, towns, counties and cities to deliver HDR services across regions and geographies. Primary Responsibilities
The Highway & Roads Market Sector Director is responsible for three priority areas: Market leadership and business development (approximately 70%), Staff development (20%), and Support to Operations (10%). Specific duties include: Oversee the creation and implementation of strategic vision and direction for the market sector, aligning technical/professional services with business group and operations leadership. Serve as the Client Manager for selected key clients within the market sector and engage in projects as Principal-In-Charge where appropriate. Promote HDR services to clients within the market sector, working with client managers and development leaders. Participate as a member of the Transportation Business Group Management Team and collaborate with Regional Business Group Directors on area goals and market sector initiatives. Drive client development and pursuit processes, supporting cross-sector collaboration and other market sectors. Support area and strategic pursuits through client relationship development and pursuit activities. Engage with industry associations and participate in leadership roles within the industry and community organizations. Identify key investments (acquisitions and technology) to maintain HDR’s leadership position. Monitor marketing capabilities and coordinate with departments to achieve goals; develop and maintain relationships with senior client leaders and industry counterparts. Lead HDR’s presence with industry organizations in the US, Canada, EMEA and APAC regions. Staff Development
The MSD will lead an organization that supports client delivery and staff growth. Responsibilities include recruitment and development of market sector personnel, and alignment with HDR’s growth objectives. Assume responsibility for Global Market Sector P&L in coordination with local area managers; coordinate work-sharing across departments. Collaborate with business class directors to drive technical excellence and support project delivery and marketing efforts. Coordinate staffing plans for key hires and approve all key/strategic hires; participate in annual performance conversations for market sector leaders. Operations Support
Assist Regional Business Group Directors and area managers in delivering professional services for area projects, monitoring market sector profit and loss, staff assignments, work-sharing, QA/QC, and project delivery. Monitor performance indicators (NFE/NFB, profit, unbilled revenue, AR, losses, investments) and optimize resource use. Assist with contract reviews to manage risk, staffing, and claims resolution; promote QA/QC and disseminate lessons learned. Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications Minimum 20 years of planning/engineering experience in highway or bridge design. Professional engineering license or equivalent. Current or past leadership positions within highway/road industry associations (AASHTO, IBTTA and others). Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering or closely related field. Minimum of 12 years of industry experience including leadership. Strong written and verbal communication skills; client management and growth track record; budget and staff management experience.
