Position Overview
The Phlebotomist ensures that appropriate specimens are collected from the proper patients, as well as work and communicate effectively with a variety of patients, including but not limited to, critically ill, trauma, newborn, geriatric, and outpatients in numerous outpatient settings. The Phlebotomist provides accurate patient identification, specimen labeling, preservation, transportation and pre-test processing. He/She performs clerical duties; processes orders; performs computer functions; files reports; records/sends messages; gives reports to the nurse/doctor; and, transcribes doctors’ orders on outpatients.
Expectation is for all performed duties to be in accordance with Singing River Health System procedures and policies, accreditation organization, and governing guidance and publications for health care employees.
Responsibilities
- Collect appropriate specimens from patients and ensure accurate patient identification, labeling, preservation, transportation, and pre-test processing.
- Perform clerical duties, process orders, use computer systems, file reports, send/record messages, and relay reports to nurses/doctors; transcribe doctors’ orders on outpatients.
- Communicate effectively with a variety of patients including critically ill, trauma, newborn, geriatric, and outpatients in multiple outpatient settings.
Qualifications
Education
High School graduate or equivalent required; some college with courses in a health or science-related field preferred. Training in computer, basic office equipment and medical terminology preferred.
License

Certifications
If certified, a current Phlebotomy certification from an approved agency is preferred. Certification must be from one of the following: ASCP, APA, AMT, NHA, NCCT, NIHP, MedCA, NPC, AAH, or any accredited certification reviewed for approval by the Lab Director; other certifications not listed may be reviewed for approval.
Experience
One (1) year Phlebotomy experience preferred. Must have equivalent combination of education and/or experience with documented knowledge and skills.
De-escalation Training
Must have de-escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days); must have appropriate level of de-escalation training.
Reports To
Lab Supervisors, Lab Operation Manager and Lab Director or Service Line Patient Care Coordinator
Physical Demands
Stand, bend, stoop, lift, climb, and perform multiple physical motions. Requires ability to stand for extended periods and significant walking; potential exposure to communicable diseases or radiation. Visual and auditory requirements as described; manual dexterity to manage equipment and tubes; ability to work extended periods and adapt to hospital needs including weekends.
Mental Demands
Must demonstrate keen mental faculties, strong communication, attention to detail, ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and maintain collaborative relationships.
Special Demands
Superior customer service, professional etiquette, keyboard proficiency, and knowledge of MS Outlook and Word. Ability to work independently and as part of a team; understand that errors may have serious patient consequences. Potential exposure to infectious diseases and radiation.
