Overview
Director of Finance role at Inside Higher Ed. The Director of Finance will provide high-level strategic leadership and support for the financial and administrative goals of the School for Global Inclusion and Social Development (SGISD) and its institutes, including the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) and the Institute for New England Native American Studies (INENAS), all housed within the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). The incumbent will have authority and responsibility over all aspects of financial management and operations of the Institute and School, including grants management, budgeting, and accounting functions, and will lead budget preparation and financial planning. The position involves coordinating with CEHD leadership, ORSP, OBFP, and central university offices to ensure compliant and efficient financial operations. When authorized by the Institute Director, the incumbent may serve in their absence with the authority to make and implement financial decisions. Responsibilities
Provide high-level strategic leadership and support for comprehensive business management for the School and its Institutes, including analyses of project costs versus expenses, funding structures, and opportunities for efficiency improvements. Lead budget formulation, analysis, monitoring of budgets, allocations, expenditures, fund balances, and related financial activities to ensure accuracy and compliance with fiscal practices. Prepare an annual consolidated budget for the School and provide regular budget information to the Dean, Associate Dean, and Director of the ICI; analyze and evaluate budget requests. Collaborate with CEHD administration and other units to inform budgetary decisions; serve on the Research Administration Team and support staffing and professional development. Maintain a system for tracking and planning FTEs of grant-funded staff across projects; provide at-risk personnel information as needed for notifications and planning. Supervise grant-administrator staff and coordinate with ORSP, OBFP, and other campus offices to ensure compliant financial operations. Manage accounting functions for sponsored and non-sponsored accounts, including accounts payable/receivable, ensuring timely processing and adherence to budgets and sponsor policies; recommend variances as needed. Collaborate with Principal Investigators on grant applications, including budget and budget narrative preparation, approvals, and changes as appropriate. Oversee submission and processing of grant-related documents (continuations, progress reports, supplements, amendments); liaise with external grant managers and sponsors on financial matters. Assist PIs and ORSP in negotiating contract terms with sponsors and collaborators; maintain knowledge of sponsor requirements and applicable federal regulations (e.g., OMB Uniform Guidance, FAR). Provide technical assistance for budgetary compliance, grants processing, and reporting; support subrecipient monitoring and reporting. Oversee purchase orders, contracts for services, personnel actions, and related forms; provide training to administrative staff as needed; obtain necessary approvals at departmental and Dean levels. Oversee internal and external audits to ensure compliance; represent SGISD/ICI in financial administration matters at meetings and committees as appropriate. Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures; participate in initiatives to improve sponsored program processes; orient and supervise grant staff; support diversity, equity, and inclusion in financial management practices. Develop and participate in specialized training related to sponsored programs; perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Master’s Degree in business or finance is required, with a minimum of seven to ten (7-10) years of relevant professional experience. Higher education experience strongly preferred. Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills are essential. Prior supervisory experience is required. Experience with pre-award and post-award financial management across grants, contracts, subcontracts, and cooperative agreements is required. Knowledge of program administration guidelines (e.g., OMB Uniform Guidance, PHS Grants Policy Statement, FAR) is required. Supervisory experience in research/grant administration is preferred. Experience in human-subject compliance, intellectual property, conflict of interest, procurement, and/or human resources is preferred. Membership in professional organizations such as SRA or NCURA is preferred. Proficiency in Excel and other administrative software; Knowledge of federal regulations including OMB Uniform Guidance, PHS Grants Policy Statement, FAR; Experience with electronic sponsored program services systems (e.g., Grants.gov, NSF Fastlane, eCommons); Ability to negotiate contracts and manage relationships with international partners; understanding of university policies and procedures; strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under pressure; Strong interpersonal and communication skills; well-organized and customer-service oriented; Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
