Overview
The EPB/GTW Director of Quality & Safety provides strategic leadership for quality, patient safety, patient experience, and performance improvement programs across Brown University Health and the hospital. The Director develops, directs, coordinates, and evaluates care transformation activities to improve core measure performance, physician peer review, professional practice evaluation, and patient safety event investigations with corrective actions as needed. The Director oversees quality and patient safety initiatives, aligns them with organizational priorities, and collaborates with hospital leadership to foster a culture of safety, customer service, and continuous improvement. The role reports to the Brown University Health Vice President of Quality & Safety with dotted line engagement with hospital CMO/CNO and the VP of GTW, and works to integrate quality efforts with the LCS strategy for quality and operational excellence. The director leads a highly skilled team of quality and patient experience specialists focused on meeting customer needs and exceeding expectations. Oversees and reviews selected quality issues and guides staff in leading investigations of critical events; facilitates root cause analysis and FMEA projects and develops corrective action plans. Provides feedback reports to staff and leadership; assists with regulatory and accrediting reports (e.g., Department of Health, Joint Commission) as needed. Interfaces with Care Transformation, Quality and Safety and other quality initiatives across Brown University Health; optimizes resource use to meet goals and establishes departmental priorities aligned with organizational strategies. Oversees document peer review activity in required tracking systems; facilitates Medical Staff and system departmental performance improvement activities; serves as a liaison to Medical Staff for quality improvement actions involving patient care processes and physician processes. Promotes communication and performance improvement information among Brown University Health and the Medical Staff; leads site and system-wide improvement teams using various performance improvement methodologies. Manages clinical and patient safety data needs and guides teams toward successful improvement strategies; monitors performance metrics for diagnostic populations and communicates results to stakeholders. Collaborates with hospital leaders to develop, measure, analyze, and implement process improvements; identifies data-driven solutions for improvement; supports a culture of employee engagement to improve patient outcomes. Develops customer service training, onboarding content, and just-in-time curriculum for new initiatives related to core quality functions; helps establish a robust patient experience program based on best-practice models. Acts as a resource for leaders, staff, and providers on patient relationship development and quality outcomes measurement; coordinates and supports implementation of improvement tactics aligned with organizational priorities. Presents and educates stakeholders on improvement tactics; monitors and integrates best practices into existing systems; serves as a role model for Brown University Health’s CARE values. Ensures compliance with the Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct; provides leadership for Quality Priorities services and related activities; performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Education: A bachelor’s degree in nursing or a healthcare-related discipline is required. A master’s degree in a related healthcare field is required. Certifications: Six Sigma Black Belt or equivalent; CPHQ, CPPS, or other quality certifications are preferred. Experience: A minimum of seven (7) years of related experience in quality measurement and reporting systems, oversight of physician peer review programs, and process evaluation/improvement; extensive knowledge of performance improvement systems and methods; strong project management, facilitation, data analysis, and communication skills; experience with electronic health records, Microsoft Office, databases, and outcomes management; ability to lead cross-functional teams. Supervision: Supervisory responsibilities for up to twenty professional and support staff, including selection, direction, and evaluation of work.
