Position Information

Classification Title: Agricultural Technician II

FLSA: Non-Exempt

FTE: 1.00

Responsibilities

Provide research support to stone fruit and pecan projects at the USDA-ARS Fruit and Tree Nut Research Lab in Byron, GA.

Perform farming duties in pecan and peach orchard settings, operate tractors (>= 50 horsepower) and related implements, pesticide sprayer calibration and application, mowing, planting, harvesting, and equipment repair.

Scout orchards for disease and pests, monitor plant and soil nutrients, assist in planning applications, irrigation management, and scheduling for planting, irrigation, spraying, fertilizing, pruning, and training.

Maintain and repair field equipment and implement farm management procedures.

Work on a grant-funded position with continuation based on project needs and funding.

Qualifications

Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.

Preferred: Technical knowledge in agriculture, horticulture, or related fields; documented agricultural experience in fruit and nut production.

Georgia Pesticide Applicator’s license or ability to obtain within 90 days.

Significant experience operating tractors (>= 50 horsepower) and implementing farm management procedures (pesticide spraying, mowing, planting, harvesting, equipment repair).

Basic understanding of biological sciences related to agriculture, agronomy, horticulture, or plant pathology; experience in farm management or maintenance.

Physical Demands

Ability to lift up to 40 pounds and work outdoors in heat and humidity.

Regular walking, bending, and other physical exertions; potential for long workdays depending on workload.

Driving to perform job-related tasks as needed.

Work Schedule Monday – Friday; 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
