JOB DESCRIPTION The Tax Senior Manager, SALT - Unclaimed Property is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications and other accounting-related matters that affect their business objectives, with an emphasis on unclaimed property compliance and consulting. This role utilizes tax and/or accounting skills (e.g., project management, data reconciliation, financial auditing, internal controls, process/system enhancements) in a consultative capacity to analyze sporadic data sets and model outcomes. The Tax Senior Manager, SALT - Unclaimed Property will recommend alternate actions and methods for complying with unclaimed property statutes and regulations. Responsibilities include project management, client and state presentations, coordinating compliance, audit defense, VDAs, and other consulting engagements; managing client expectations and deliverables; marketing, networking and business development; and applying new unclaimed property policies to engagements. The incumbent will work with Core Tax and Audit Principals, Directors, and Senior Managers to provide SALT expertise to clients. Job Duties
Research Identify complex situations requiring research; outline issues and sources to be consulted Analyze research findings and prepare detailed reports Develop relationships with in-state and out-of-state Department of Tax (DOT)/Department of Revenue (DOR) personnel and other authorities Stay updated on latest unclaimed property statutes, regulations, and case law
Unclaimed Property Compliance Obtain and manipulate client data to prepare annual escheat returns Utilize systems such as FSI Track and BDO Global Portal for data gathering Import data, prepare returns, and identify exemptions/deferrals Perform reconciliations between data gathered and reported Draft responses to notices from state authorities; assist with due diligence and client payment processing Support exam processes and routinely communicate with clients and UP team members
Unclaimed Property Consulting Draft memorandums and other documentation on escheat issues Determine escheat planning processes; develop policies and internal controls Represent clients in audits and voluntary disclosures; identify gift card planning opportunities Conduct client interviews, onsite visits, and develop work plans Review general ledger and source data; prepare ESCH/UP templates Develop exposure quantification models; support remediation procedures Collaborate with other STS professionals on tax sub-specialties; assist in consultative selling Manage engagements and achieve business development goals; update CRM; participate in trade organizations and public speaking Manage client expectations and oversee multiple engagements simultaneously
Unclaimed Property Controversy Represent clients before tax authorities on contested issues
Unclaimed Property Related Software Use FSI Track, tax research databases, and other software; maintain knowledge of GL systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) Participate in technology enhancements for the UP group
Other duties as required Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise day-to-day workload of SALT Managers, Senior Associates and Associates on engagements Ensure training on relevant software; evaluate performance and support professional development Provide periodic performance feedback and career guidance Act as Career Advisor as appropriate Education and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required; Accounting is preferred Experience
Six (6) or more years of experience in tax, financial statement auditing, internal auditing, or forensic accounting in public accounting or industry; supervisory experience required License/Certifications
CPA, Attorney (admitted in U.S. jurisdiction) or Enrolled Agent (EA) or equivalent preferred Software
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) required; Power BI, Alteryx and other software preferred Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Excellent verbal and written communication; strong analytical and research skills Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines Ability to multi-task and work independently or in a team Proven ability to manage a team of tax professionals and delegate work Ability to build relationships with internal and client personnel; executive presence on engagements Advanced knowledge of tax standards and tax information sources; understanding of taxable conditions and related issues Salary ranges are provided for transparency and may be adjusted based on candidate qualifications and geography. National Range: $99,750 - $262,500; Maryland Range: $99,750 - $262,500; NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $99,750 - $262,500; Washington DC Range: $99,750 - $262,500. About Us
