Overview
Senior Electrical Engineer (Facilities) role with WSP in the U.S. Flexible hybrid or remote work arrangement for the right candidate. Based in the Facilities Electrical Group with options for Boise, Idaho; Overland Park, KS; or Minneapolis, MN offices. In this role you will work with a multi-disciplinary engineering team, leading and executing the electrical power components of industrial and government projects. The position involves creating and issuing construction drawings and specifications, bills of material, construction cost estimates, power system studies and reports. A strong foundation in grounding, lightning and surge protection, lighting, protective relaying, prime and standby generation, low and medium voltage motor control centers and switchgear, medium voltage substations, mission-critical power systems, and UPS is expected. Thorough knowledge of NEC, NFPA, ICC, energy codes, and IEEE standards is required. Experience with ETAP, PTW, or EasyPower for modeling and studies is strongly preferred. Team leadership, mentoring, excellent communication and presentation skills, personal motivation, and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently are key attributes. Your Impact
Determine methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing data related to substation components, equipment specifications for procurement packages, IFR/IRC detailed design and review processes, and IEEE/NESC Standards/NERC regulations for design work. Lead and execute electrical power components of industrial and government projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Perform professional and complex electrical engineering work related to single-line and three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, general arrangements, substation layout, bus arrangement, grounding design and lightning protection in conformance with applicable standards. Incorporate future-ready design approaches, equipment sizing, cabling, AC/DC panel design, conduit and trenching strategies prioritizing safety and usability. Support senior engineers with component research and recommendations, and field equipment applications and operations. Provide technical input on site conditions and guide engineering, design, testing, maintenance, modifications, and construction procedures. Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, grounding potentials, short-circuit studies, protective device coordination, one-line diagrams, protective relaying, and substation layouts. Prepare plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety and phasing plans, and updated electrical infrastructure layouts coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients. Work independently or within cross-functional teams to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, including cost estimation and material/labor planning, ensuring compliance with specifications and regulatory requirements. Prepare data visualizations and technical reports to communicate findings and recommendations. Maintain high quality and responsiveness to client requirements in alignment with WSP standards. Prepare technical reports and presentations addressing design and construction issues or opportunities. Assist in data analysis from field investigations and contribute to action plans for moderate- to high-level risk mitigation. Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs) and ensure regulatory data integrity and retention. Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally. Remain current in latest electrical engineering techniques and practices. Collaborate with other engineers and planners on projects with infrastructure authorities at Federal, State, regional, and local levels. Demonstrate ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience as an electrical engineer providing design deliverables for large capital projects. Engineer in Training Certification. Experience coordinating with Operations and project controls for reporting and proposal development. Proficient knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, design/build, permitting, and project work-related issues. Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including involvement in rehabilitation and new design projects. Working knowledge of applicable engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements. Ability to perform technical calculations and interpret plans and specifications against relevant regulations. Project management experience with small to mid-size projects, including tracking hours and expenses. Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations of construction and design of facilities, applying regulations and policies. Effective interpersonal and communication skills with both engineering and non-engineering audiences. Self-led, detail-oriented, capable of multi-tasking in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently and guide junior team members with QA/QC adherence. Proficiency with technical writing, office automation, design software (e.g., CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP), AutoCAD Electrical, and related tools. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to testing results and data analyses. Ability to direct field activities with subcontractors to ensure safe and efficient task completion. Proven commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP health, safety, and related policies. Ability to work hours aligned with project requirements, including travel as needed. Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Engineering. Essential Professional Licensure/Certification. Experience with MasterSpec/SpecsIntact specification authoring and editing. Construction cost estimating experience. Experience with AutoCAD and/or REVIT design work. Experience designing to NAVFAC and USACE design standards. 40-Hour OSHA HAZWOPER training (preferred).
