Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry Division of Comprehensive Oral Health houses several disciplines including, Periodontology, Dental Hygiene, Comprehensive Dentistry, Operative Dentistry/BioMaterials, Prosthodontics, and Endodontics. The Division of Comprehensive Oral Health works seamlessly across multiple specialties to ensure patients experience frictionless oral health care treatment.

Position Summary:

The Dental Assistant Supervisor position will supervise, hire, plan, organize and monitor the work of the other dental assistants in the Periodontology and Prosthodontics Graduate Clinics. This position assists clinical faculty in training dental, dental auxiliary, and graduate specialty students in clinical practice and help manage the day-to-day operations of the Graduate Clinics. This position schedules the work of dental assistants and provides dental assisting in support of the department. This position supervises ordering, stocking and inventory management of clinical supplies.

The Dental Assistant Supervisor is responsible for implementing and monitoring compliance and training assistants on the following:
- clinic policies and procedures concerning operatory and surgical tray preparation
- sterilization of instruments and maintaining asepsis
- exposing and processing radiographs
- established infection control policies
- proper use of equipment
- collecting and recording patient data
- taking intraoral photographs

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalency and completion of an accredited dental assisting program; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work with and exercise tact and diplomacy with a variety of people, including staff, students, faculty and patients. Strong professionalism, excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to work on many projects simultaneously, to negotiate for successful results, and to thrive in a fast-paced setting while providing excellent customer service, a must.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Previous chairside dental assisting experience.

Preference for experience working in a team environment, with periodontal patients and/or supporting surgical procedures.

Previous lead/supervisory experience.
