Overview
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is hiring a Dental Assistant in the ICE | Oral Health Clinical department. The position is Full-time, Regular, Day Shift, with no sponsorship available. Applications close on 11/01/2025.
Responsibilities
- The Dental Assistant will support dentists during procedures, prepare treatment rooms, sterilize instruments, and provide excellent patient care.
- Organize and assist dental hygienists in the delivery of dental procedures in the Oral Health Clinic; guide hygiene patients through dental processes prior to treatment, educate patients in oral hygiene instruction, and provide postoperative instructions.
- Perform assessments that include obtaining and reviewing patient health histories; take/record blood pressure and other vital signs; perform appropriate dental charting and treatment documentation in the electronic record; expose and process dental radiographs of diagnostic quality; administer nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia and monitor sedation cases; perform coronal polishing and in-office whitening.
- Perform daily and routine maintenance of dental hygiene equipment; clean and sterilize dental instruments, supplies, and dental assist units; maintain organization and supply of the sterilization area; establish and maintain an organized, efficient, cost-effective inventory control system; monitor supply levels and re-order with the assigned purchaser; maintain stock of daily supplies in all hygiene clinic rooms.
- Review daily schedules and resolve conflicts as necessary; perform a variety of clerical and administrative duties (answer telephones, make appointments, and other duties as assigned); assist with front desk/business administration duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma/GED; completion of a dental assisting training program; minimum of 1 year experience as a dental assistant.
- Must be trained in four-handed dentistry; thorough working knowledge of Current Dental Terminology (CDT) codes; OSHA regulations; and the Arkansas Dental Practice Act.
- One year minimum experience as a registered dental assistant required if trained at a CODA-accredited entity; five years minimum experience if trained or license eligible through a non-CODA accredited entity; must be currently licensed/certified in Arkansas as a registered dental assistant; must possess permit for radiography, coronal polishing, and nitrous oxide administration.

- Physical Requirements: Stand, sit, walk, bend/crawl/crouch/kneel/stoop or reach overhead frequently; lift and carry 25 lbs; push/pull 25 lbs; use hands to touch/handle; talk/hear continuously; read/think analytically; color discrimination and depth/peripheral vision may be required; exposure to biological, chemical, dust, electrical, fumes/gases/odors, radiation, and sharp objects/tools.
