Responsibilities
- Phlebotomy on all ages; venipuncture procedures
- Hard sticks and needles, urine, thyroid testing; processing
- Detail oriented and maintain good experience
- Computer skills; data entry and processing
- Experience performing venipunctures and specimen handling
Summary
The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshoot, train and make workflow recommendations.
Position Responsibilities
- Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, updating patient information, etc.
- Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.
- Explain clearly and courteously the venipuncture process and other specimen collection as required.
- Demonstrate technique using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Understand all physician orders. Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
- Check test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport. Store specimens at required temperatures, label containers, and follow protocols to maintain specimen integrity. Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attend annual department trainings. Handle inquiries by answering telephone calls and reading laboratory results.
Minimum Qualifications
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where employed (as required).
- Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 1.5 years of experience.
