Department Overview The Educational Opportunity Programs (EOP) provide programs to improve retention and academic success of first-generation, low-income, and historically underserved students. This position focuses on serving students in the EOP Wellness Program and collaborating with campus departments to implement wellness activities. EOP resides within the Division of Student Affairs and Success at UC Santa Cruz.

The Student Success and Equity (SSE) portfolio supports campus-wide student success services, advising, programming, and retention initiatives. SSE includes multiple units and operates across 8 facilities/locations with over 17,000 students and 64 career employees plus 475 student staff. Job Summary Under the general direction of the EOP Director and supervision of an EOP Assistant Director, the EOP Academic Counselor provides direct services to EOP students and leads one of the following initiatives: Undocumented Students Services (USS), First-Gen, or Wellness. The incumbent will focus on student counseling, retention, and graduation, and collaborate with campus partners to support student success. The counselor will supervise student staff and participate in professional development.

Appointment Information

Budgeted Salary: $76,000 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

Job Duties 50% - Academic/Personal Counseling and Case Management

Provides multicultural academic counseling across disciplines to at-risk populations (low-income, first-generation, undocumented, underrepresented, pell-eligible).

Plans and provides programming, advising, support services, wellness, and referrals for EOP students.

Collaborates with campus partners to create a welcoming environment that supports academic success and retention.

Maintains partnerships with student service and academic units to resolve complex student issues (financial aid, housing, advising, health care, etc.).

Analyzes student issues and provides solutions and alternatives.

Helps students develop strategies to solve academic and personal problems; advises students and implements retention programs.

Escalates cases to appropriate offices and engages with colleagues to advocate for students.

Meets with students individually and in groups to provide support, coaching, and counseling on academic planning and campus life.

Maintains relationships with students on leave and ensures action plans to return and complete studies.

Requests and submits departmental awards for students facing financial hardships.

25% - Program Development and Coordination

Organizes EOP programming and creates materials for publication and marketing.

Develops collaborative programs and facilitates group discussions; hires and supervises graduate interns and paraprofessionals.

Supervises EOP student staff and coordinates wellness activities for EOP cohorts.

Assesses student financial need for wellness awards.

10% - Project Management

Implements special projects on educational equity, retention and graduation of EOP students.

Serves on campus committees and collaborates to increase awareness and inclusion of EOP students.

Liaises with student services, academic departments, and off-campus partners; shares best practices campus-wide.

Coordinates with others as assigned.

10% - Professional Development and Training

Develops and implements programs to enhance student success and equity.

Facilitates workshops and partnerships with external social services and community groups.

Mentors student interns and keeps abreast of student trends; provides training and ongoing professional development.

Delivers training to build capacity of staff and recommends best practices for EOP services.

5% - Program Evaluation and Reporting

Leads goals aligned with Student Affairs and university strategy for diverse student populations.

Analyzes data on retention and outcomes; prepares reports and briefs on student cases and program effectiveness.

Remains informed on policy issues and maintains reporting forms for intake and monitoring.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related area.

Knowledge of counseling theories and practices, student development, and related methodologies.

Experience advising or counseling students who are first-generation, low-income, underrepresented, or immigrant backgrounds.

Ability to collaborate with diverse populations and teams; strong written, digital, and oral communication skills.

Knowledge of FERPA and other student privacy policies.

Ability to manage cases and develop programs to meet diverse student needs.

Proficiency with computers and technology for word processing, research, calendaring, and email.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in education, counseling, social work, or related field.

Special Conditions of Employment

Pre-employment criminal history background check required.

On-campus work with possible remote work; must meet telecommuting requirements if hybrid is approved.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required; professional conduct as per UCSC standards.

Mandatory trainings including UC compliance; vaccination policy applies.
