Overview
Ophthalmic Technician - Satellite Office (Ophthalmology) role at Inside Higher Ed. Primary responsibilities are to provide technician/clinical support to physicians. Secondary responsibilities include limited administrative duties such as responding to messages from patients and physicians and assisting with patient requests for refills, forms completion and prior authorizations. Responsibilities
Clinical Records patient history including chief complaint, ocular history, past surgeries, medical condition, medications, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk and family history. Checks pupil response to light and afferent pupillary defect. Measures central visual field using Amsler Grid. Instills eye drops under physicians\' direction. Measures and records distance and near visual acuity. Measures and records intraocular pressure using tonometry techniques. Performs Humphrey visual field testing; refers patients for further testing where appropriate. Performs OCTs and IOL Master measurements to prepare patients for cataract surgery. Performs Pentacam measurements and accurate refractions. Tests color vision and depth perception; screens for ocular motility disorders. Uses slit lamp to examine eye surface; performs specialized tests (e.g., Bright field Acuity Testing, Potential Acuity Meter, pachymetry). Maintains and sterilizes instruments; basic maintenance of clinical equipment. Compiles data for clinical studies and may participate in other clinical research projects. Teaches patients proper contact lens insertion/removal and handling techniques. Performs ultrasound scans (A-Scan) and adjusts equipment for difficult scans; takes fundus photos as needed. Assists with in-office procedures and ensures exam rooms are disinfected and stocked. Maintain supply chains, monitor medication expiration dates, and ensure compliance with microbial control standards. Maintain refrigerator logs, sharps containers, and familiarity with JCAHO requirements. Non-Clinical Manage epic in-basket messages and patient questions; process refill requests and prior authorizations for in-office procedures and medications. Provide support to front desk staff by triaging scheduled appointments and addressing clinical questions relayed to front desk staff. Assist with tracking and processing of forms (e.g., MVA, disability, FMLA). Offer input on templates/schedules to maximize patient flow and physician efficiency. Maintain general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy/physiology, systemic diseases, ocular diseases and emergencies. Maintain required COA ophthalmic technician certification. Other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED. One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician; must obtain COA from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date. CPR certification required. Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education as permitted by Johns Hopkins University equivalency formula.
