The Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department (NRES) in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, seeks a full-time academic year, tenure-track assistant/associate professor in forest operations starting August 17, 2026. Cal Poly emphasizes a "Learn by Doing" philosophy and is focused on preparing graduates to make a positive impact from day one. The candidate should be able to teach courses supporting the undergraduate Forest & Fire Sciences major, including forest operations, forest management, fuels management, and related courses. The candidate should also be capable of developing new courses that bridge teaching and scholarship and enhance curriculum and instruction. Anticipated Hiring Ranges

Assistant Professor: $90,948 - $105,156 Associate Professor: $105,492 - $114,720 Responsibilities (implied from job description)

Teach courses in forest operations, forest management, fuels management, and related areas in support of the undergraduate Forest & Fire Sciences major. Develop new courses to enhance curriculum and instruction; contribute to teaching and scholarship combined with outreach and applied work. Engage in scholarly activities in the area of forest operations addressing climatic and conservation challenges in western forests; involve undergraduate and graduate students and external stakeholders in research and outreach. Foster partnerships with the forest industry, professional forestry organizations, and relevant stakeholders; leverage Cal Poly’s Swanton Pacific Ranch to enhance education and applied scholarship and strengthen industry connections. Collaborate with department faculty, students, Swanton Pacific Ranch, and external partners on natural resources topics. Required Qualifications

Doctorate degree focused on forest operations, forest engineering, and/or fuels reduction operations by start date; or nearing completion (ABD) with proof of degree awarded prior to appointment start. Record of publications in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations. Excellence in teaching, effective communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop an externally funded, applied research program involving undergraduate and graduate students and partnerships with stakeholders. Demonstrated commitment to student-centered learning and multidisciplinary collaboration. Excellent written and oral communication skills; proficiency in English. Preferred Qualifications

Record of teaching and research excellence; ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students. Experience collaborating with forest industry, public forest managers, state/national agencies, and professional organizations (e.g., California Licensed Foresters Association). Desire to become Registered Professional Forester; productive teaching and scholarly activity with student-involved research. Experience with diverse populations and fostering an inclusive environment. Special Conditions

The NRES Department offers B.S. degrees in Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences, Environmental Management and Protection, and Forestry and Natural Resources, and an M.S. in Environmental Science and Management. Approximately 850 undergraduate and 30 graduate students are enrolled, supported by 22 tenured or tenure-track faculty. Resources include campus field facilities and Cal Poly’s 3,000-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch in Santa Cruz County, enabling hands-on instruction and research. The department collaborates across campus, including participation in Cal Poly’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire institute and the Center for Organic Production and Research. How to Apply
